The lost subculture of America's rebellious, Reagan-era hardcore set is explored in filmmaker Paul Rachman's cinematic adaptation of Steven Blush's book. Disillusioned by politics, angered by greedy record labels, and bound together by a powerful antiestablishment sentiment, bands such as Minor Threat, Black Flag, Dead Kennedys, and Bad Brains paved the way for such later bands as Nirvana and Pearl Jam by fearlessly questioning -- and frequently mocking -- the status quo, and proving that you don't need radio play to reach an audience. Whether working for a real change or simply attempting to shake things up in the music scene, these bands gave a voice to the legions of youthful fans who felt their opinions had been neglected in mainstream society. In this documentary, concert footage combines with interviews to offer a comprehensive look at the musical revolution that defined an era. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi
I know its said a lot but this really was one of my favorites. This made me want to listen to black flag and minor threat and all the real punk bands before it turned in to ska and emo. YOU MUST WATCH THIS MOVIE IF YOU HAVE AN INTEREST IN MUSIC IN GENERAL
I can't think of many documentaries that I'd be willing to watch more than once...but this is one of them! Thoroughly entertaining and informative. If you're a punk or hardcore fan, this is a must-see!
A good look into the scene that shaped so many peoples lives in the 80's.. It brought back tons of memories and learned a thing or two, as well... I recomend this to anyone wanting to learn about this era of music.. It's raw, and uncensored, like Hardcore should be..... btw - Regan Sucks and kill hippies!!!!!
I tell you what, when I ordered this one I was a little skepticle. When I finally got to watch it, it brought me back to high school days. The movie was a lot of fun. If you were ever into any of the bands listed, this is a good show.
compared to the book there are some things they didnt cover, but overall a cool documentary. Worth a watch if ur into hardcore. I liked the special features tons of extra interviews and live footage.
while the narrative threads (and graphical/layout devices used to show the geo-community mesh that these bands created) are there, the director fails to play out this doc to the fullest. like most films or books about a "scene" or "movement," Rachman is forced to make a quick exit from the diegetic in favor of little one-liners from aging member so the scene. punk is dead. yeah, great. whatever whatever whatever.
ditto for the ending interview with MacKaye. what a drag.
