A young woman of privilege and a man of no social status meet as a small town prepares to wallow in forbidden pleasure in this satiric drama, the first feature film from writer and director Claudia Llosa. Madeinusa (Magaly Solier) is a young woman whose father, Cayo (Ubaldo Huaman), is the mayor of a small town in the Peruvian Andes. Madeinusa is bright and attractive, but this has caused her more than a few problems; her father clearly favors her over her sister, Chale (Yiliana Chong), and since their mother ran away, Cayo has displayed an inappropriate attraction to Madeinusa. While the town strives to accept modern ways, they still embrace a strange custom that began many years ago -- on Good Friday, after acknowledging the crucifixion of Christ, the townspeople engage in a festival of decadence, with any and all sins permitted following the Savior's death until He rises again on Easter Sunday. As the Holy Day festival of Sin is about to start, Madeinusa happens to meet Salvador (Carlos De La Torre), a vagrant laborer who was passing through town when Cayo's men arrested him. For Madeinusa and Salvador, it's love at first sight, but the bizarre backdrop of the festival of sin makes it difficult for them to get to know one another. Madeinusa received its North American premiere at the 2006 Sundance Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

It is an OK movie, not bad for a first time director Claudia LLosa. I recomend it, be patient. La Teta Asustada (The Milk of Sorrow) from the same director, that won the Golden Bear in the Berlin Film Festival is better.

A very unusual movie, interesting and disturbing at the same time. A study of a culture in Peru with unusual rituals and some unfortunate events follow. Very real feeling...Good.

A feast for the eyes. Interesting use of both Spanish and Quechua. Magaly Solier is a revelation, especially considering that she has no formal acting training. Carlos de la Torre is disappointing and a very weak actor with very strange diction. The cinematography is outstanding and the story very interesting to those who understand the socio-anthropological interactions that take place in remote populations throughout the world, not just in Latin America. I highly recommend this film, first as a beautiful work of art and second as an interesting story with a somewhat weak ending.

"Eye for Film" Review: Claudia Llosa's film is very accomplished for a debut feature. She cleverly spins this tale of the old world on a collision course with the new, while maintaining a depth and breadth to the characters. By keeping the core cast small - the two sisters, dad and the incomer - there is room for attention to detail. She perfectly captures the contrast of the opulent presents given to Christ for Easter with the poverty of the village and makes a statement about changes to the world order without being condescending to a culture that is fast ebbing away. This is a coming of age drama with a novel twist, which offers an insight into a world of tradition rarely considered by filmmakers. by, Amber Wilkinson

This movie is really awful. The whole point of the movie seems to be to satanize--not satirize--the people of the highlands of Peru by way of a very slow-moving, stereotypically predictable and mediocre story. The white guy who comes from Lima to report on the town's religious celebration and is unjustly detained during it looks like a junkie, not someone the town's virgin would so easily fall for. The ending is not so unexpected; it follows the typical trajectory of a story where the highland characters are portrayed as wayward and even amoral. This movie is a true waste of time.

I was not impressed with this film at all. As a matter of fact, I cannot believe that I watched it all because it was so painful. I have to say that I thought ending was clever, but I certainly would not recommend watching the whole movie. It was slow, the parts where people break out into song were odd and creepy, and the incest (oh yes, there was incest) was really difficult to swallow. I recommend skipping this film.

It is well elaborated. It shows a sad and crude reality of the forgotten small towns in the Peruvian Andes and how catholicism has a distorted influence in its people.
