In the tradition of The Day After Tomorrow, Deep Impact, and Armageddon, Peter Fonda, Tia Carrere, Luke Perry, and Emma Samms star in Supernova, a three-and-a-half hour miniseries originally created and produced for The Hallmark Channel. In this special effects-laden sci-fi actioner, Fonda plays a Dr. Shepard, a famed astrophysicist who discovers -- all too late -- that the sun's age has been miscalculated, and that it will supernova in a matter of only days -- destroying the Earth and everything else in our solar system. As Dr. Shepard flees to Africa, his prophecy materializes: enormous solar particles careen toward the Earth, destroying its international landmarks. My very first review and it is STAY AWAY. It's made for TV but thats no excuse for how bad this movie is. The previous reviewer is spot on, nothing really makes any sense in the end, and you end up wasting 172 minutes of your day. I kept wanting to just turn it off, but morbid curiosity kept me watching. I may have reached the bottom of the action/adventure barrel.

Oddly for SciFi, in the end the heros didn't do anything important. It ended with "never mind, we were wrong and world isn't going to be destroyed. Sorry". Then they made the annoying reporter, whose incorrect reports caused the deaths of thousands if not millions out to be some kind of hero. And the military officer who was trying to save as many as he became the villian. Apparently killing the entire human race was better than somebody making hard decision on who should live and die. And what was with the odd (and pointless) subplot with the serial killer?

I love these disaster films in general, but I like them to have more man vs. nature interaction. The sun just did its thing and the 5 people that knew what was going on just sat back and said, "huh...what is there to do?" And, this movie was more interested in the character sub plots like the crazed serial killer and the terrified wife and kid. Potential for a lot more science fiction and action fun, but opted for the boring family in need story line instead. Bad move on the filmmakers part. Next time stick with the disaster and do something with THAT!

First the movie's premise is against science since our sun is too small to go Supernova. It's ok to have bad science, since it is fiction anyway. But the movie is too formula. When I heard the evil general discussing their plan to save part of humanity, I didn't see any evil. But the heroes still stomped out like they were killing babies or something. It's following a formula; but they didn’t bother to set up a real evil plan. The good guys didn’t have any alternative, they just wanted to escape and die with their familes even though the bad guy had offered to save their families. I guess to be “not evil” any plan would have to save everyone on earth. I think they had some leftover script about a psychotic killer/rapist that was really poorly written and played out. They built it up the whole movie, then only had a few minutes to play the ending in which the bad guy seemed rather stupid (as did the hero).
