Proving that you can never guess what you'll find when you clean out the basement, a man of the cloth discovers that ultimate evil has made a hiding place in his cellar in this tale of terror. Father Loomis (Donald Pleasance) is a priest who discovers a strange object in a church basement -- a canister filled with a swirling and volatile green substance. With the help of Professor Birack (Victor Wong), Loomis discovers the startling truth about his find -- it seems that Satan, who is actually an alien life form, had a son, and the essence of the devil's spawn is trapped inside the canister. The evil spirit has been guarded by a group calling themselves "The Brotherhood of Sleep," but the spirit has the ability to free itself whenever it decides the time is right...and it seems that time is just around the corner. Prince of Darkness was directed by horror master John Carpenter; he also wrote the screenplay under the pseudonym Martin Quatermass. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

This movie is not for those who only love action slash movies. The horror presented takes thought on the part of the viewer. I have personally watched this 5 times and still I get scared, and horrified, as well as seeing something new each time. Done in the Eighties it is rather timeless. Worth a watch and personally feel a purchase.

A John Carpenter classic with my favorite actor Donald Pleasance. The green blob is very annoying and ruins the story a little bit but what it does to people is creepy. Also I love the dream with the devil because of its creepy feel. This is probably the second scariest movie (after the Exorcist) I have ever seen because it has the most chilling ending ever.

Takes a while to get going, and some of the acting is absolutely dreadful. The premise is interesting, and it's not overly gorey.

Carpenter's worst flick ever! Bottom line and no two ways around it. I'm a huge Carpenter fan and I've watched all of his movies. The acting was so terrible it was actually funny. The only decent thing about this movie was the concept of quantum physics and Christianity and if Carpenter had invested more time with the plot it could've been a truly terrifying movie. A real shame this one. .

BUY THIS MOVIE!! It is one of the FEW "real" cult classics! Fairly low budget, but EXCELLENT story line. Perfect movie to curl up to watch on a late Friday night with lots of popcom!

more scifi than horror, but still scared me as a kid, the hobo scenes with alice cooper were great.

Old movie and flaky music. Acting real campy and not very good. Made when special effects were pre Star Wars.

This movie is just plain boring. It has a few "boo!" moments, but that's really only due to come camera cuts and close ups. The quantum physics approach to explaining Christianity was almost interesting (as detailed in "What The Bleep Do We Know"), but the writing fell short of providing any actual hard science to make it interesting. So by the end of the movie you are just waiting to see where it goes, which is nowhere. Note: Alice Cooper kills someone with a bicycle, and THAT was something I've never seen before. Har har!
