Based on the novel by Muriel Spark, The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie stars Maggie Smith in the title role. Smith won an Academy Award for her delicately textured portrayal of an eccentric teacher at an exclusive Scottish girl's school. Miss Jean exhorts her "gels" to follow their hearts and never lose their youthful idealism. Unfortunately for her, she also stumps for her favorite political figures: Mussolini and Franco. In addition, she can't keep the innermost details of her private life a secret, and in fact boasts about her sex life to her students. Her prize pupil (Pamela Franklin) becomes so much a clone of Miss Jean that she ends up a threat to the teacher. Ultimately, Miss Jean loses her position, but not the hearts of her students. The box-office success of Prime of Miss Jean Brodie was due in great part to the popularity of the title song, as recorded by Rod McKuen. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

I knew Maggie Smith won the Academy Award for this film but I had never seen it...most of the films with Maggie were later when she was quite mature..she was magnifient in this role and quite attractive.. the supporting cast, especially the young girls(some not so young) were equally convincing. Why can't Hollywood make these kind of films today??? 5 stars!!

Maggie Smith was amazing in this movie, playing headstrong and flawed Jean Brodie who has naive political notions and ultimately, naive notions about the girls she teaches. I hope a substantial percentage of Harry Potter fans see this film when they are grown. Be warned, though, even though this is rated PG, there is an explicit scene involving Pamela Franklin.

Jean Brodie, a charismatic teacher at a grey and severe Edinburgh girls' school, takes foolish risks as she blurs the line between her job and private life. Maggie Smith plays her with flair and emotion. Now, 4+ decades later, it's fun to think that Dame Maggie also owns the character of another teacher: the legendary Professor Minerva McGonagall of Hogwarts School! In my opinion, she's among the very best actresses performing today.

Maggie Smith plays a charismatic teacher in this 1969 Muriel Spark adaptation. Engaging her students by her personality and love for beauty and strong leadership, miss Jean Brodie loses herself to the world of dreams and ideals. The story of walking a fine line between mentoring and leading is quite suitable for young adults, despite some nudity scenes and dubious moral standards of characters.

This was a deliciously different movie. I just loved Maggie Smith playing such an arrogrant, but delightly amusing part. She was so beautiful. I love plots that are so different from anything else you will see.

This is one of my all-time favorite movies. The plot is logical without being predictable. The lines are memorable without being cliched. The characters are beautifully developed by excellent actors. Maggie Smith's performance certainly earned the Academy Award she received for her title role. Also, the young Pamela Franklin in the role of Sandy is equally commendable; she gives a striking performance and manages to hold her own against the formidable Maggie Smith. The disc did skip during the eighth track, but not enough to miss much or detract from the overall enjoyment of the movie. I would like to caution parents that the rating of PG for this film is deceptive. Due to sexual references and nudity, I personally believe that this film would be highly inappropriate for young children.
