Prime Cut (1972)

Michael Ritchie, better known for his gentle satires of American social institutions, enters Don Siegel territory in the unusual crime thriller Prime Cut. Lee Marvin is surly collection agent Nick Devlin, who is hired by Chicago racketeer Jake (Eddie Egan) to collect an overdue payment from Kansas cattle baron Mary Ann (yes, Mary Ann!) (Gene Hackman). When Devlin travels west to get Jake's money from Mary Ann, he finds the cattle king mixed up in complex drug deals and pimping wild women -- two of which are Poppy and Violet (Sissy Spacek and Janit Baldwin -- both in their film debuts). ~ Paul Brenner, Rovi

For a technologically impaired movie, by todays standards, it was ok. The plot is simple and accurate for it's timeframe. It can grab your attention and hold it for the entire movie. Sissy Spacek plays innocence very well, even with nudity.

I wasn't totally blown away, but what do you really expect from a movie that was made in the early 1970's? I wasn't sure exactly what the issues were between Gene Hackman and Lee Marvin's characters, but there was enough action in this movie to keep me interested through the end. There was more nudity in this movie than I expected since it was made in '72, but I'm a guy and that's obvioulsy A-OK with me. In my opinion, Sissy Spacek looks about as beautiful in this movie as I've ever seen her.

Interesting early teaming of the meat industry with human trafficking, both as problematic today as they were when this film was produced. It does not present nor does it need the wild women mentioned in the synopsis, and the nudity is not as exploitative as in later films. Amazingly subtle for being almost 40 years old; hard to go wrong with Ritchie, Marvin and Hackman.

The way Movies should be made! You just can't beat Marvin and Hackman. Very interesting plot/story line.

This movie has a simple linear plot, focused largly around a gangster/revenge motif. The story is unbelievable, with Lee Marvin playing a bill collector that has way too much confidence for his limited hunchmen and firepower. The poorly developed characters are complemented by abundent full frontal nudity and a grotesque slaghterhouse scene that opens the movie. Notable points are Sissy Spacek's full frontal shot and Gene Hackman's gregarious villain. At least I didn't have to pay a full rental fee for this disaster.
