Pride and Prejudice (1940) Reviews

Pride and Prejudice (1940)
Member Rating:
Long before 19th-century novelist Jane Austen became a hot property in Hollywood, MGM produced this opulent and entertaining adaptation of one of Austen's best-known novels. The elegant and slyly satirical comedy of manners gets under way when socially conscious Mrs. Bennet (Mary Boland), with the begrudging assistance of her husband (Edmund Gwenn), begins seeking out suitable (and suitably wealthy) husbands for her five daughters: Elizabeth (Greer Garson), Jane (Maureen O'Sullivan), Lydia (Ann Rutherford), Kitty (Heather Angel), and Mary (Marsha Hunt). One of the least likely matrimonial prospects is Mr. Darcy (Laurence Olivier), a rich, handsome, but cynical and boorish young man. Naturally, Elizabeth Bennet, the strongest-willed of the Bennet girls, is immediately fascinated by him, and she sets out to land him -- but only on her own terms, and only after she has exacted a bit of genteel revenge for his calculated indifference to her. Though Austen's novel was set in 1813, the year of its publication, the film version takes place in 1835, reportedly so as to take advantage of the more attractive costume designs of that period. Not surprisingly, a few changes had to be made to mollify the Hollywood censors (eager to find offense in the most innocent of material): the most notable is the character of Mr. Collins (Melville Cooper), transformed from the book's hypocritical clergyman to the film's standard-issue opportunist. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

In every way. Both Garson and Olivier are at their prime. Combining the writing and direction with the cast that cannot be duplicated, this experience will play itself in your mind forever. Experience it.

I LOVE old movies. I love the "drama" that they put into each character. This movie was wonderful. I was pulled into the movie and thought about it for days. I happened upon it again the other day on tv and just fell in love again. If your a "romantic fool", then you should LOVE this movie. You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll fall in love.....I'm asking for a copy of this for Christmas. :-)

My daughter and I love Pride & Prejudice. She has read the novel several times, and we have both watched (several times) the 2005 Movie version (we own that one), the BBC and the A&E (own that one too!) versions and enjoyed them all. But this one was difficult to watch. It just seems like one of the many old Hollywood flicks from the 40's. Olivier was okay as Mr. Darcy...but Greer Garson as Elizabeth??? Never! I would rather have seen Maureen O'Sullivan in that role (she plays Jane). The costumes were the hardest to look at. It said in the synopsis they changed the costumes to 1835 instead of the 1815 in Austen's novel. That changes the whole look and feel of the story. Overall, we were disappointed and will stick to our other versions.

The dresses in this movie are outstanding. Too bad the story is cut short. Mr. Darcy is wonderful. If you like B/W classes, this is a good one.

If you love old movies, this is a classic from MGM. Laurence Olivier is as handsome and dashing as ever, the movie was full of melodramatic acting, and the ladies' dresses and hats are the biggest I've ever seen! However, if you are looking for a movie version of Jane Austen's book Pride and Prejudice, you will be disappointed by this one. I'd suggest skipping it and renting the version with Colin Firth or the 2005 version with Kiera Knightley. There really is no trace of Jane Austen in this movie.

This is the Hollywood of the 40's version of Pride & Prejudice. Greer Garson was too old for the part, but was probably the popular actress of the time. Same with Laurence Olivier. They are both good actors, but just too old...Darcy and Elizabeth should be young and fresh. Plus the costumes were just too much. We are led to believe that these people are living in genteel poverty, but could afford to dress all of these girls every day in brand new frou-frou dresses that must have taken yards of fabric! And those hats were ridiculous! The movie was well done and entertaining, but I enjoyed the version with Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle much more. That is the definitive P&P for me!

Honestly, as an adaptation of P & P, this should get 1/2 a star, a quarter star each for Greer Garson and Lawrence Olivier. HOWEVER this is a silly, amusing "I can't believe they actually meant to make it this way" movie. Forget Jane Austen, set aside P & P and enjoy the over-the-top period acting and classic b&w cinematography. Although it is a stretch as an adaptation of Austen's great novel, I was still "excessively diverted."

The movie made you forget that it is in black and white. I wish I could have seen the color of their outfits but is was made in 1940.

Family, two parents, married, single daughters, introductions to single men, courtship, the right way for some, the wrong way for others, the bad results for some, the wonderful for others. Vocabulary, thought, communication skills, wit, manners, an endless list of virtues and their rewards.
