A working-class English boy who has been fortunate enough to be accepted into a posh private university struggles to realize his lifelong dream while simultaneously winning the heart of the girl he loves in a romantic, bittersweet comedy directed by Tom Vaughan and starring James McAvoy, Rebecca Hall, and Charles Dance. The time is the mid-'80s, and the University Challenge phenomenon is sweeping through England. Despite his underprivileged background, Essex boy Brian Jackson (McAvoy) knows that he has what it takes to make it to the finals on one of the most popular programs in all of England. Upon being accepted into Bristol, the ambitious young student soon tries out for the school's University Challenge team, and set the gears of his ultimate fantasy into motion. Effectively estranged from his single-parent mother (Catherine Tate) just for being accepted into the school, Brian soon gets set to cross yet another class line when he becomes smitten with his beautiful University Challenge teammate and attempts to woo her into his arms her with his formidable advanced general knowledge skills. ~ Jason Buchanan, All Movie Guide

IIf your idea of a good romantic comedy is upbeat humpor full of wit, irony, malapropes, coming from a working class guy who enters a posh univerity looking to fulfill a lifetime dream of pursuing knowledge and suddenly finding himself the object of the affection of two totally different but very attractive as well as smart female classmates---wow!! This is it. Set in the mid-80's complete with lots of Tears for Fears, Psychedellic Furs, The Cure and many others as background music, I found this movie an absolute delighty! Spoofing the University hallenge quiz show of that era which was immensely poular with the Brits, this BBC/HBO production will be absolutely HATED by those equating humor with nudity, vulgarity and "potty" gags!

James McAvoy and Rebecca Hall are two sensational actors up close in this delightful comedy drama. Mature people will love it.

Definitely not a family flick. I was very disappointed in the alcohol and marijuana propositions, especially for a freshman in college!

An HBO-Tom Hanks production that is totally British, but good. Humorous and warm of the coming-of-age genre, always a fertile subject. See these noted actors when they seemed much younger than this 4-years ago release. Alice Eve was on the cusp with her Kennedy'esqe smile and natural-born good looks. Rebecca Hall is great for rounding-the-story-out. One weakness: Wasn't quite sure from where the brown envelope backstage (or wherever) came, nor who did it. Could have been distracted. Probably need to back-it-up and watch again. But it's a key plot point in the 3rd act. Hard to believe the '80's now are considered "old," "historic," and "dated" enough to be retro in styles, looks, dress, language. But it was nearly 30-years ago now. Ouch.

Another coming of age flick. This one is set in 1985-86 in England at Bristol college. A freshman there struggles to find his place, win the girl and impress her by being on a college quiz show and perhaps to impress himself as well. It had a few laughs but over-all nothing real special.
