However, I felt that the aspect of plot centered around his ability to love was off and detracted from the overrall plot line. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

(Gong Li also had a decent performance as well) The story was fantasticly told and made you feel bad for him and see where he's coming from by doing thse violent acts. Great movie with exciting tension that kept me wanting more. I was surprised with all the negative reviews when I thought this was the 3rd best Hannibal. Pick this movie up!! Sorry so many people are so narrowly focused on how much gore they can consume. Gaspard Ulliel did an excellent job of portraying the young Lecter. Of course no one can replace Hopkins. That's where the viewer needs to use their imagination. and be a little forgiving. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Yes | No

Read More The backstory of Hannibal Lecter depicts him as a child of Lithuanian nobility who loses his entire family to Russian war criminals of the most barbaric sort. Growing up in an orphanage and accepted to medical school, he is a brilliant but troubled young man who seeks vengeance - and gets it. He is played sympathetically at first, and the Russians who destroyed his life are so heinous that we're glad to see them dispatched. But we know that his mind is "squirming like a toad", as The Doors said, and he will become the horror we already know. Gaspard Ulliel is brilliant as young Hannibal; though his angular face looks nothing like Anthony Hopkins' broad one, he adopts many of the same expressions and mannerisms. Rhys Ifans sheds his buffoon and lovelorn sap roles to play the leader of the Russian murderers with all the ugliness and brutality the role calls for. Close this Review WAS THIS REVIEW HELPFUL? Read More This was just a waste of production time and money, and a true disappointment to Hannibal Lecter fans. After you read the books and about the different real-life persons that might have been the basis of this character, you have high expectations of how a presentation of a young killer would be done. This film did not meet those expectations. Even those who did not read the books or know much about the previous films were displeased by this mess. --- They should have never even bothered to entertain a romance angle for this film/ character.
