A low level mob enforcer with guns to spare and a gorgeous girl by his side discovers that he has lost control of his own fate in first-time feature filmmaker William Kaufman's eerie crime thriller. Truman Fisher (Holt Boggs) has been singled out as the natural successor Claude Rains - an ageing but notoriously sadistic assassin with a fearsome reputation. While for most aspiring hit-men this would be something of an honor, Truman begins to experience serious reservations when the mythical killer begins systematically butchering the mob family that currently employs Truman. Now, as Truman sets out into the underworld in search of the elusive Rains, he finds that the closer he gets to his target the farther his own sanity begins to slip. Of course this would be one thing if Rains were an easy target that was ripe for killing - in that case Fisher could just fire the fatal shot and clear his weary head - but with every advance Fisher makes and every bullet he dodges it begins to seem as if Rains is actually relishing the prospect of the pair's inevitable confrontation. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

This movie is a bit hard to find, so if you stumble over it feel lucky. It's low budget and rips off some ideas from some pretty great films but then it creates idea's of it's own and kicks some major @ss even with the low budget. Very watchable if you can look past the low budget stunts and action (though for what they spent on it they came up with some very inventive and sweet stuff). If the director had a budget this movie would have been amazing. Think Boodock saints, Seven and Saw mixed together in a lowbudget blender and then made cooler then it has a right to be.

I was expecting the film to be about this guy teaching his prodigy. If you like action and this is a good film it combines lots of ideas from other movies and also adds its own twists. Overall i would like this to have been a big budget film. Some of the ideas where not very well plotted and some scenes could have been more realistic to truly make this a classic.

Terrible. All 40 minutes of it. That was as long as I could stand to watch this. I am a huge fan of low budget and indie films. This movie is both. The premise for this film was very enticing and who doesn't like a good assassin flick. However, 40 minutes later there is no more plot than in the first 40 seconds. There was no good vs. evil. Nobody to hope would make it out alive. Not even a decent anti-hero. Alien vs. Predator has more going for it. If you like senseless violence and 30 minute mind-numbing gun fights, this film's for you.

I LOVED this movie. Particularly as this is essentially an idie/lo-budget flick. Gotta like a movie where the "good" guy's not all that good a guy and the bad guy is REALLY bad. Great script, particularly well acted all around. Nice twists and turns. Action/fight sequences were well done - though certainly not in the John Woo category. All in all, an excellent ride. Fun, violent, unexpected. Good find.

Just because you can entertain this way doesn't mean you should. This is a very negative movie without any redeeming characters. It is similar, in this way, to TO LIVE AND DIE IN L.A. (1985). There is a lot of shooting and killing and ruthless sadistic violence without anyone in particular to cheer on as the hero. Director William Kaufman gives you a choice between the bad, the evil or the monster. If entertainment is not uplifting some way, it has no worth. I don't need a happy Hollywood ending but I do require more than violence for its own sake. And why is it called THE PRODIGY? It seems to be misnamed. The main character, Truman, never takes an actual lesson from the mysterious hooded hit-man and shows no inclination of taking on his work. Folks, looking at the response this review is getting, I wonder if our SOPRANOS culture is giving its respect to the wrong things in life.
