The Beguiled (1970)
Member Rating:
The Beguiled is a Freudian mood piece from the team of actor Clint Eastwood and director Don Siegel. Eastwood plays Corp. John McBurney, a wounded Union soldier during the Civil War, who takes refuge in a prim-and-proper Southern girl's school run by Martha Farnsworth (Geraldine Page). Chauvinistic, insensitive and conceited, McBurney takes full advantage of the women by bedding each successively -- and then learns the true meaning of "a woman scorned." ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Not the typical Eastwood and NOT the typical Civil War story. A Union Soldier stumbles wounded into a Southern school for girls. Then things get hot - and weird. Edgar Allen Poe meets Tennessee Williams is how this was billed when it came out 36 years ago. SO hard to believe as this would raise more than an eyebrow even today. First half hour is fairly innocent - and then it gets ...twisted..and more so until the bitter end. I loved it - would love to own this one because it is so unique of all else he has ever done...especially for his early 70s movies - this one was wayyyyyy out there & would have been quite shocking by 1970 standards.

I saw this film when it first came out and was thrilled to see it again. It's one of Eastwood's best roles.

This movie stuck with me for years and I am happy to find it at Blockbuster. Excellent story, timeless subject with a full on dose of payback. Poor guy didn't stand a chance but it had to be worth it!

I liked this movie for it's late 1960's take on woman - (read the director's comments in the bonus features). But that also makes the movie a little dated. Still an interesting film. Watch the trailer - it's hilarious - if not misleading!

This movie was a little racy but very entertaining. The female charactors were very well done. It kept my interest throughout. Its about a yankee civil war soldier who is discovered wounded by a girl in the south. She takes him to an all girls school. Instead of turning him in to the prison camps he stays there to heal. But the real reason is the women are attracted to him and lonely and he takes advantage. A nice story from beginning to end.

I haven't seen this movie in many years and think I appreciated it much more at this viewing than earlier. There is a lot going on and suspense is a big part of the plot. Performances are very good. Definitely worth a watch.

This is a very different role from all of Eastwood's other work...but it's pretty awesome. Sure, it's a little sick and twisted, but isn't life sick and twisted?? One thing for sure...you don't feel an abundance of sypathy towards his character in the end. I like Clint Eastwood...and I like this movie.

Not bad, not great. Interesting cringe on feminine revenge back when Eastwood had those Californication looks. Filmed in Louisiana before Louisiana started giving massive tax credits to Hollywood - and it has that look.

This is one crazy movie. If you want to see an a-typical Clint movie, then this is it. It's just so crazy. It's definitely good for a laugh and a "WHA?!" though
