Hard Candy director David Slade took the helm for this adaptation of Steve Niles' terrifying comic-book series of the same name. In Barrow, AK, one night can last an eternity. One month every year, this town is plunged into darkness for 30 days due to its location far north of the Arctic Circle. While extended periods of darkness are something that the locals have become accustomed to, this year something sinister is about to emerge from the long and unforgiving night. As a maniacal horde of vampires assumes control of the city streets and begins to feast freely upon the terrified citizens, the local sheriff (Josh Hartnett), his wife (Melissa George), and a small but resilient band of survivors will be forced to choose between saving themselves or helping the few remaining members of their community survive the blood-soaked siege. Original comic creator Niles collaborated with screenwriters Stuart Beattie and Brian Nelson to pen the film, which was produced under Sam Raimi's Ghost House Pictures banner. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi
Loved it. It built suspense gradually, then all hell broke loose. A rare horror film that makes you care about the characters. I actually cried! - Michelle C.
It was a great movie, it gives you the creeps at just the right moments. There is a nice build up of suspense and Josh Hartnett really gives a stellar performance along side Melissa George. My husband and I both enjoyed the show and would recommend it.
This film puts a lot of thought into what "real" vampires would be like if given the opportunities and environment of modern times. The film itself is legitimately scary & even has some backstory to its characters that modern horror hardly ever delves into. My only argument would be that I doubt a group of people could hide for 30 days from a venomous clan of vampires in a tiny town in the middle of nowhere. I assumed the vamps in this film don't have super-accurate hearing & senses to easily find the group, but I understand solving this problem would've meant no survivors and the film is over in 10 minutes. I would've also liked a bit more backstory to the vampires themselves. They appeared much older and more brutal than usual movie clans which made them both frightening and very interesting.
100 minutes of a fantastic horror movie and then a totally lame ending. Still though, the tone of the movie, the violence, and the horror is solid. Still very much worth a rent and I even bought it.
Wow this was bad. The premise interesting but the movie just got worse and worse and slow and boring and just plain bad. It tries so hard to be scary, and the vampires come across as over acting idiots....not cool.
