When a pudgy, bespectacled seven-year-old, Olive (Abigail Breslin), voices her desire to take home the coveted Little Miss Sunshine crown at an upcoming beauty pageant, her wildly dysfunctional family sets out on an interstate road trip to ensure her a clear shot at realizing her dreams in former music video directorial team Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris' quirky feature debut, starring Greg Kinnear, Steve Carell, and Toni Collette. Despite early career success as an outspoken motivational speaker, family patriarch Richard (Kinnear) continues to cling to his "Refuse to Lose" philosophy, much to the chagrin of his increasingly annoyed spouse, Sheryl (Collette). Add into the mix a Nietzsche-reading teenage son (Paul Dano) who has taken a vow of silence until he finds his fate as a fighter pilot; a horny, heroin-happy grandfather (Alan Arkin) with a penchant for creative profanity; and a suicidal genius (Carell) and Proust scholar still reeling about losing both his male lover and his MacArthur Foundation genius grant -- and the stage is set for a road trip in which sanity is sure to take the back seat. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

This movie was very unusual and for that reason, enjoyable. Every male character was dysfunctional in one way or another and Mom was the glue that held them all together. When you looked at the chubby little girl with glasses dreaming of being a beauty queen, you knew it would be a far reach for her to win. But, that was her dream and the dysfunctional family all supported her dream. The ending was hysterical! This was a good change from our normal action and drama picks.

This was a movie that was painful at times to watch, but I couldn't stop. The character development was strong and the story was great. i love th fact that they poke fun at the ridiculous world of child pageants. Besides Steve Carell is good in just about anything.

Movie was slow in places, but hysterical in others. We're big Steve Carrell fan -- thought this was one of his more marginal works.

One of the most depressing "comedy" movies I've ever seen. This movie is sad - not comical.

While this wasn't a bad movie, it is extremely overrated. I can't for the life of me figure out how it won or was nominated for so many awards. It started out with great promise, but by the end is was nothing more than a 90 minute very special episode of Blossom: everybody learned a lesson. Worth watching, but tone down your expectations.

A good little flick, lots of laughs. Goofy ending, but well worth a watch.

A ripping good time, great characters and great cast -- Alan Arkin at his best and the Oscar well deserved ..

This movie does have some funny scenes and has a fairly good plot....but I found it to be a bad movie. It's just horrible...not wanting to miss a beauty pagent so you steal your dead grandfather's body from the hospital and take him with you? Ick! Seriously, you will either love this movie or hate it. But worst case scenario, it won't be a total waste of your time if you hate it.
