Taunted by their classmates since grade school and never quite able to escape the culturally suffocating confines of their homogenized Midwestern hometown, a pair of small-town misfits make a break for the big city in this comedy from director Lorene Machado. Celeste (Margaret Cho) is an overweight, Korean, former goth-punk whose best pal since childhood has been queeny African-American Bam Bam (Bruce Daniels). Now in their early thirties and curious to explore the outside world, Celeste and Bam Bam catch wind of a reality television makeover show that's in search of a challenge. Convinced that they are the perfect candidates and encouraged by the show's booking assistant (Alan Cumming) to make the trip, the pair pack up the car and set their sights on New York City. Upon arriving in the Big Apple for their television debut, Celeste and Bam Bam find their moment in the spotlight threatened by a former high school nemesis turned posh salon owner assigned to perform makeover duties on the peculiar pair. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi
Let me start by saying I am a big fan of Margaret Cho. That is why I am so disappointed with this film. She is too good to be putting out this kind of trash! The acting, the script and the storyline were all poor. I would have given this one star, except anything with Wilson Cruz in it (even for a few mins) gets an extra star!
The racist antedotes were disturbing, and I guess it was kinda cute, but not what I expected from Margaret Cho. It was interesting how she played her mother's role as well. Reminded me of a low budget movie. I've seen worse!
After reading the tepid reviews here I expected to really be disappointed by this movie.. but I actually found myself watching to the end and even laughing out loud a few times, despite the far-fetched plotline and the repetitive references to numerous racial and sexual stereotypes, which the main characters do nothing to rally against or dispel in any way. By far, the best parts of the movie are Margaret's portrayal of Celeste's mother, and the cameos by Alan Cumming, Wilson Cruz and Jane Lynch. John Cho does a creditable job considering his limited role, but Bruce Daniels and the whole High School crew could use some serious lessons in subtlety and believability. If you are a Margaret Cho fan, there is much to love here.. if not, you might want to look elsewhere.
