A love-sick nobleman seeking to marry his sweetheart does his best to find his ruling prince a suitable bride so that he himself may wed in this screen adaptation of the popular Broadway musical The Princess and the Pea. No one in Prince Dauntless (Denis O'Hare)'s kingdom is permitted to marry until the prince himself exchanges vows -- a problem hindered by the fact that the prince's overprotective mother, Queen Aggravain (Carol Burnett), has thus far thwarted all efforts to marry her son. This does not sit well with the honorable Sir Harry, a man whose heart longs to wed the fair Lady Larkin (Zooey Deschanel), and after a long and arduous journey specifically designed to find the prince a bride, Sir Harry returns to his kingdom to present Princess Winnifred of the swamps (Tracey Ullman). Immediately stricken by the princess, Prince Dauntless sets into motion plans for a lavish wedding as his scheming mother cooks up a test that's sure to send his marital plans awry. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

I must confess at the age of 65 to never having seen ONCE UPON A MATTRESS in any of it many incarnations. This surprises even me, considering the avid theatergoer I once was--before arthritis, ticket prices & lack of quality offerings drove me into the realm of the wide-screen monitor & daily DVDs. So I come to this version a "Mattress" virgin and--wow-- I thoroughly enjoyed it. What a treat to hear a real Broadway score again! Even if this is not a first-rate example (it's no Porter), second-rate is so much better than most of today's paltry musicals ("Wicked" is an exception). The score by Mary Rodgers is sweet, eminently hum-able and alternately lovely & bouncy, and Jay Thompson's lyrics are always funny and surprisingly clever, given their pretty much post-Porter/pre-Sondheim time. This cast--combining TV, film and theatre folk--is classy indeed, with musical kudos going to a splendid Matthew Morrison ("Light in the Piazza") & Zooey Deschanel (surprise!).

If you enjoy plays and musicals you will enjoy this. Tracy Ullman brings her own into this. Carol Burnett is over the top as only she can be .I saw the play done by a high school and enjoyed it too it is just fun and besides ...she swam the moat!

Once upon a mattress is an AWESOME musical, it takes the classic tale of The Princess and the Pea and turns it into a fun movie for the entire family. If you like Carol Burnett then you will love this movie. I give it two thumbs up :)

Musical and a bit awkward. There are also slightly hidden messages within. Most of which I would not be comfortable with my children hearing. A silly momma's boy, overly exaggerated. A pregnant woman wants to get married...by the way her lover makes a remark "you had a moment of weakness" Suggesting that women must control the man in all things "moral".

I love this musical. I only wish it was Carol Burnett as Fred.....because that's how I had originally heard the songs. LOVE HER!

This was a wonderful adaptation of a Broadway musical. With two great comedians,Carol Burnett and Tracey Ullman, the movie was very funny. The music by Mary Rogers was good, but not great. The show is a cute romantic comedy carried primarily by Carol and Tracey.

This movie had some of the WORST MORAL VALUES I have ever seen in a childs movie. This movie is all about an unwed pregnant couple scemming to get married. Getting married is great, but why would a childs movie be about something so grownup.
