One of the oldest epic poems in the English language gets a robust visual interpretation in this historical epic shot on location in Iceland. Hrothgar (Stellan Skarsgård) is a Danish king who murders a troll that has been terrorizing his countryside. But Hrothgar spares the life of the troll's strange young son, who with the passage of years grows to become Grendel (Ingvar Sigurdsson), a fearsome warrior intent upon avenging his father's death. As Grendel begins his slaughter of the king's closest confidants, Hrothgar realizes his life is in danger, and he calls upon the brave and fearless Beowulf (Gerard Butler) to track down and kill Grendel. As Beowulf and his band of warriors search for the vicious and elusive Grendel, he crosses paths with Selma (Sarah Polley), a beautiful and sensuous witch whose alliances are divided between Beowulf and his archenemy. Produced by Canadian, British, and Icelandic concerns, Beowulf & Grendel was a major box-office success in Canada before crossing south to American theaters in the summer of 2006. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

This movie offers a completely differewnt view of the monster, Grendel. For whatever reason, lots of new films have come out on this story in the last 10 years, and many of them are painting more of a sympathetic picture for the old monster. This one does the same, and offers some fresh views on most of the characters. Unfortunately, this one ends up being out-shined by the more recnt animated version of the same story, with it's own twists.

Beowulf (2007) got it's storyline from this movie Beowulf & Grendel (2005). This was good but the Blockbuster Beowulf was a lot better, but if you have seen Beowulf you will want to see this movie as well.

Another version the the epic, Beowulf. Beautifully filmed in Iceland the movie is well done and will be appreciated by those who enjoy literature.

This is a very neat twist to the Beowulf legend. While it is definatly noticable that it is not an American made film, it was very entertaining to those who are history/literary nuts.

My review may be tainted as I had seen the IMAX 3D version of Beowulf directed by Robert Zemeckis and was blown away by it's spectacle and use of technology but I felt that the film was also well told and interesting. So in my quest for more I rented Beowulf and Grendel knowing full well it would lack the spectacle but hopefully fill in some of the quieter moments that I thought Zemeckis's film lacked. Unfortunately that's all you get. The views are breathtaking. Most of the acting is actually very good (even grendel) except for Sara Polley who is just horrible here. But it's just pretty boring. Not a horrible film but nothing compared to Beowulf (2007).
