Play Misty for Me (1971) Reviews

Play Misty for Me (1971)
Member Rating:
Play Misty for Me marked Clint Eastwood's debut as a director, and it gave him the then-unusual opportunity to play a regular contemporary guy in a thriller about sex, obsession, and stalking. Eastwood's Dave Garver is a self-centered California jazz disc jockey struggling with the idea of committing to his on-again, off-again girlfriend Tobie (Donna Mills). One night he meets the mini-skirted Evelyn (Jessica Walters) in a bar, and he goes home with her for what he assumes is a one-night stand. Dave discovers, however, that Evelyn has repeatedly called his show requesting that he "play 'Misty' for me," and she is not about to go gently into the night now that she has bedded him. Even though it touches on the early-'70s flashpoints of sexual liberation, studio execs expressed doubts about why anyone would want to see a movie featuring Eastwood as a deejay. Eastwood reportedly answered that he was not sure either, but he thought it was a good suspense story, and he offered his services as director for free. Play Misty for Me wound up making five times more than it cost and is a precursor to such erotic thrillers as Fatal Attraction (1987) and Basic Instinct (1992). Eastwood mentor Don Siegel appears early on as a bartender. ~ Lucia Bozzola, Rovi

Finally available on DVD, and filmed in beautiful scenic Caramel, Calfornia, Clint Eastwood directs his first movie which was considered an original and disturbing for it's time. Casual movie watchers may grow impatient with some of film's 1970's montage content. But, if you consider yourself a hard core movie buff and can appreciate an "older movie" then don't hesitate checking out this classic 70's flick. A must rental for Clint Eastwood fans.

First time seeing this picture and boy what a suprise! Eastwood is great in his first directorial debut. This movie has first rate acting and a dark omnious tone throughout, much like a Hitchkock thriller. I especially liked the jazz overtone and the soundtrack playing throughout and found the horror elements/ "Psycho" atmosphere to be first rate. This was just as good as "Fatal Attraction", if not better. This is without a doubt one of the greatest stalker pictures ever made.

They said there never woulda been FATAL ATTRACTION without this. Clint eastwood even said the actress scared him to the point where he wouldnt act with her again. They say the best actors play themselves lol maybe she really was crazy. Good flick.

This movie has held up very well for its age. Jessica Walters is still scary good and Clint was at his best. Great scenery and good story. I recommend this movie highly.

Yes, it's seems dated, but it captures perfectly the 70s cool guy ethos. Eastwood's directorial debut is marked by self assurance and great camera work. His love of jazz is apparent in the scoring and the scenes filmed at the Monterey Jazz (Pop?) Festival. It was filmed entirely on location in Carmel CA; the dramatic coastline was used to great effect. The plot, a late night DJ is stalked by a relentless fan, was remade as "Fatal Attraction"; however the later film is far less sexy and far more ponderous. Jessica Walter's portrayal is Kewpie Doll as axe murderer. As Clint's romantic interest, a young Donna Mills brings, among other things, the most photogenic blue eyes, all the better to widen in terror as Clint's crazy stalker closes in on her. Scary fun.
