Co-adapted by Tom Butterworth and Jez Butterworth from Valerio Massimo Manfredi's best-selling historical adventure novel, Doug Lefler's period epic The Last Legion unfurls in 470 A.D., just prior to the fall of the colossal Roman Empire. As the most recent in a long line of caesars, a young Roman child, Romulus (Thomas Sangster), is poised to inherit the throne -- until Germanic forces invade, lay siege to the city, and brutally murder his parents. At the last second, with his life hanging by a thread, Romulus receives the protection of military commander Aurelius (Colin Firth), who assembles a cadre of rebels, including Romulus, the boy's magician instructor, Ambrosinus (Sir Ben Kingsley), and the Indian female warrior Mira (Aishwarya Rai). After Romulus discovers an enchanted sword once claimed by Julius Caesar, the troupe heads out to the province of Britannia and Hadrian's Wall. There, the men will regroup with the Ninth Legion and plan one final triumphant stand against the barbarian invaders of Rome. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi

The Last Legion is an interesting, visually appealing and well acted movie. I highly recommend it. I rented this movie because I am a diehard Colin Firth fan, and so was not surprised by his excellent performance. The rest of the film lived up to his performance as well.

I can watch flicks like this all day, even though my Wife tends to get sick of it. I love anything about king Arthur and so on, this movie layed the groundwork for my favorite movie of all time, Excalibur!

Wow, this movie was really bad. The story had some potential, but the casting was so poor, and the editing some of the worst I've ever seen! Colin Firth's facial expressions made it impossible to not realize how uncomfortable he is in an action role. The romantic scenes between him and Aishwarya Rai were laughable - literally, my husband and I spent much of this film giggling at how poor it was. The actions scenes were some of the most poorly choreographed I have ever seen, and they were made worse by the poor editing that actually slowed them down. The only bright spot in this film was young thomas Sangster (who also starred with Colin Firth in Love Actually - a charming romantic comedy more appropriate for the elder actor). He played the young, frightened Caesar well and with a believabilty that is missing from the rest of the movie.

It is the end of Imperial Rome and the Goths are after the last Caesar, a boy who is whisked away by his military guard to Brittania for protection and alliance with the remnants of the Ninth Legion there. Colorful and action packed epic that segues into the legend of Excalibur and King Arthur.

A different role for Colin Firth, whose understated but commanding presence as a Roman warrior anchors this story linking the fall of Rome and the history of 5th century Britannia. Thomas Sangster as the young Caesar is quite good. The fighting sequences are believable, action packed and well done, with a refreshing absence of gore.

This was a good movie. The story line was good, and quality was good. It had known actors in it. I had seen this movie on Sci-fi, but I didn't realize it was the same one. I liked it then. I would recommend this movie.
