Adam Shankman's adaptation of the stage musical Hairspray, itself an adaptation of the non-musical John Waters film of the same name, stars Nikki Blonsky as Tracy Turnblad, an overweight high-school student whose only dream is to be on a local Baltimore teen dance program. While her father (Christopher Walken) tells her to follow her dreams, her mother Edna (John Travolta in drag) reminds her that she doesn't look like the girls on that show. After impressing the show's host (James Marsden), Tracy earns a coveted spot on the program, but when she becomes a popular addition to the cast, she earns the wrath of the prettiest girl in school -- a girl whose mother (Michelle Pfeiffer) just happens to operate the local television station. Tracy's visit to detention hall opens her eyes to the racial tension on the show, as does the budding relationship between her best friend (Amanda Bynes) and an African-American boy named Seaweed (Elijah Kelley). Thus empowered, Tracy attempts to integrate the races on her favorite program. ~ Perry Seibert, Rovi
Not my favorite genre. Still, I have to admit i enjoyed the choreography and story. The singing, not so much. I've never understood musicals. They seem to be only concerned with entertaining. This one has a nice message though. Walken was terrific. Michelle Pfifer is also great. I don't know why Travolta would take on such an idiotic role, but I guess it works for the dancing around. I still can't believe I enjoyed it, but I recommend it. It was a good musical.
Great movie...Love the entire thing. ONLY reason it didn't get all 5 stars.. John Travolta...still sounds like travolta and talks like him...I don't think he picked up the Balmer accent enough....
Other wise...SO BUY THIS MOVIE...you WILL BE SINGING when it's done!
This was a pretty good movie for being a musical, which I don't care for so much. It was funny and entertaining and with a good story. I enjoyed it along with my 13 year old daughter, who wants me to buy it....
Found this movie very Retro, took me back 40 yrs, but was worth the memory trip. Really great cast of characters and you even get to see John Travoltra play a woman.. Found it very fun to watch, great family movie, and a good musical.. If you want something lite for the night to watch with alot of humor and great music, pick this, it's worth it.
I remember watching the previews and thinking what a dumb concept this movie would be. However, I was luckily wrong, this movie is very entertaining. Kept me laughing throughout. Watch this movie!
