One of Luis Buñuel's most episodic films, The Phantom of Liberty focuses on no one particular narrative. In the beginning, a man sells postcards of French tourist attractions, calling them "pornographic." A sniper in Montparnasse is hailed as a hero for killing passersby. A "missing" child helps the police fill out the report on her. A group of monks play poker, using religious medallions as chips, and in the most infamous sequence, a formally dressed social group gathers at toilets around a table, occasionally excusing themselves to go into little stalls in a private room to eat. ~ John Voorhees, Rovi
HAS FRENCH POLITICAL OVERTONES FOR THE TIME PERIOD-WILL NOT BE ENJOYED BY THE AVERAGE VIEWER.VERY MIXED UP WITH STUFF THROWN IN WHICH WILL MEAN NOTHING, CAMPY HUMOR.
I had been waiting for this movie to come out on DVD. I first saw it in the theater in the mid 1970s and thought it was hilarious so I had to bring my friends to see it again with me! The plot helps you try to examine the irony of each situation as presented in the movie. It sure makes you ponder and wonder if "Life is just a game?" It is worth your time to see it and leaves you on the floor roaring with laughter!
Not that funny. The directing is horribly stale and the writing is absolutely clueless. The director admits that the rest of the film isn't up to the quality of one of the only funny or remotely clever skits involving a young girl who is lost but not lost. The bit about the assassin is funny as well, but long stretches of the film pass whilst inducing almost no laughs. People ought to wake up and realize that the so-called "sophistication" of European humour is illusory--it's just not funny. If it was consistently absurd or clever, it wouldn't matter so much if it was constantly funny, but it isn't either of these things. Also, I've never seen as much animal exploitation as is on display in this film. The skits constantly drag emus and chickens unnecessarily into the film out of--I assume--a low minded taste for the exotic, and I've never seen so many fur coats in my life. Try and Google "anal electrocution."
