Prolific television and film director Rod Hardy helms this tale of four young orphans coming of age in 1960s-era Australia. Soon after the quartet leaves the orphanage behind for a seaside holiday, rumors that one of them is about to be adopted lead to steadily rising tensions among the tightly knit group. Adapted from Michael Noonan's popular novel by screenwriter Marc Rosenberg, December Boys is headlined by Harry Potter film series star Daniel Radcliffe. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

Refreshing role for Daniel Radcliffe of Harry Potter fame, as the oldest of a group of boys (orphans) who are treated to a seaside holiday on the Australian coast. Great family film. Spectacular scenery and music & very nice movie line.

Admittedly, likely the only reason this movie was even released in North America is the celebrity of the eldest child actor, Harry Potter himself Daniel Radcliffe. However, this coming-of-age film quietly dazzles. A combination of the soulful grittiness of the film's well-chosen soundtrack and the ruddy wildness of the Australian landscape easily seduce the viewer, much like it does the orphans who quickly fall in love with their seaside holiday and the couple who may adopt one of them. But camaraderie wins out. The casual banter and brotherly quarreling between the December Boys make subtle magic out of the embrace of boyhood and the awakening into manhood.

I was totally surprised by this movie. Beautiful scenery and a very nice and simple plot; there were no chases, killings or brutal scenes only a group of children who did not want to be separated even though they had to continue living their lives, in an orphanage. Recommen this movie for its simplicity and beaty. Dr Sherrington

This is an interesting movie...a well-told story and a peek at the relationships among residents of an orphanage. I liked it.

I rented this movie because I wanted to see Daniel Radcliffe in a different role, and it was kind of cool. He's not the main character, and once I realized this, I was able to focus on the story. It's neat to see how an untraditional family unit can really fulfill its members.
