This comedy drama, a sort of British version of The Big Chill (1983), was directed by Kenneth Branagh. Ten years after they were members of a music and comedy troupe at Cambridge University, a diverse group of friends in their early 30s gather at the expansive estate of Peter Morton (Stephen Fry), who's invited them there for a reunion. Among the guests are Andrew (Branagh), who has married Carol (Rita Rudner), the star of the American situation comedy he writes; lonely Maggie (Emma Thompson), who thinks she may be in love with Peter; Roger (Hugh Laurie) and Mary (Imelda Staunton), a couple in advertising who have lost a child; and single Sarah (Alphonsia Emmanuel), who's always attracted to the wrong men, including her latest boyfriend, the married Brian (Tony Slattery). Also on hand is Vera (Phyllida Law, the real-life mother of Thompson), a housekeeper who has protectively watched over Peter since childhood. Over the course of the weekend, various jealousies and fears are revealed between joyous feasts, but a startling, tragic announcement from Peter puts everyone's petty dramas into proper perspective. American stand-up comedienne Rudner wrote the screenplay with her husband, (Martin Bergmann). ~ Karl Williams, Rovi

Great little gem of a movie. Think "The Big Chill" English style. Extremely lovable cast playing very real people in entirely believable situations. I was particularly moved by the Hugh Laurie/Imelda Staunton storyline. What makes this even more interesting is that many of these folks actually were at school together, in the Cambridge Footlights group. Incredible talent!

This is my kind of movie in many ways. I had to subtract one star because of the swearing, but that was a tremendous cast - especially for people who enjoyed Jeeves and Wooster. It could have been more explicit in telling what becomes of Maggie.

An amazing assemblage of very talented actors in a pile of self obsessed upper middle class twaddle.

An excellent film. Very witty and charming (but one could not expect less with such a talented cast). And it's always a treat to hear the Mother-tongue spoken correctly.

Brillant British comedy similar to THE BIG CHILL. Great writing, wonderful characters with a story that held me to the end. Loved it.

This was a very unusual movie, which didn't make much sense.

Before watching the movie and just looking at the cast list, I would have been prepared to give this one five stars. However, i think the script was the let down in the plot was not as good as these actors deserve. It was a nice couple of hours but not the best movie I've seen come from the British Isles.
