Wes Craven wrote and directed this surrealistic horror-comedy, which was inspired by a true story of parents keeping their children locked in a basement for years. Fool (Brandon Adams), an African-American teen, breaks into the home of the wealthy landlords who evicted his family from a ghetto tenement. A fortune in gold coins is rumored to exist inside, but Fool discovers that the mansion is a chamber of horrors presided over by a pair of incestuous, serial killer siblings (Everett McGill and Wendy Robie). The twisted couple has also tried to raise a succession of kidnapped boys. Each botched effort is handled the same way -- the victim's eyes, ears and tongues are removed, and he's sent to live in the sealed-off basement, where a colony of similarly deformed "brothers" resides. Fool is able to avoid the evil lovers as he moves through the house's maze of hidden passageways. He discovers that the occupants have a daughter, Alice (A.J. Langer), who has survived their abuse, so he rescues her and they attempt to free the "people under the stairs." Adams, who made his feature debut with in film, was familiar to viewers as the star of rock singer Michael Jackson's Moonwalker (1988). ~ Karl Williams, Rovi

This was a great movie. I had seen it a few years back, but had to see it again. Wes Craven does a great job of telling this story, and ends the movie in a great fasion.

This movie was considerably better then your avg horror movie. From the first 5 mins. of the movie I was sucked in and never looked at the clock once. Its rare for me to feel a chill from these kinds of movies but I gotta say Wes Craven got me this time. YES some of the acting was a bit hokey BUT the whole concept of these insane murderous landlords and the tortured soles living under the stairs and inside the walls was TRULY creepy. I really enjoyed this and felt tension and fear the whole way through!!!(for me thats saying ALOT)

I've always loved this movie since I was younger. It's a top-notch thriller, and the more you find out about the "couple's" sordid history, the more horrific it gets. Not really gory, but they do punish the daughter and attack Fool in rather cruel ways. Definitely worth checking out.

this movie was pretty good for being made in the early 90's, but it was not scary at all.

This is a very enjoyable horror film which virtually the entire family can watch. Yeah, there's a little profanity, but nothing worse than that. You will have to suspend disbelief to get through a few parts which push the boundaries of everyday common sense, but hey...it's a movie...right?

Why did this movie get so many great reviews? It was the dumbest movie I've ever seen. It's billed as scary, but it's kind of a comedy. I hate when they mix comedy and horror. The whole concept doesn't make sense and is nor believable. ALso, it was made in 1991 but looks much older.

Wes Cravens best movie so far. It is so smart and adds a valuable lesson. If your greedy your going to get it in the end. The bad guys black suit and with the vicious dog is so freaky. I loved this movie and the idea of the movie is so out there, I just wonder how the writers thought this up. Worth a watch.
