The British prime minister and the Royal Family find themselves quietly at odds in the wake of a national tragedy in this drama from director Stephen Frears. On August 31, 1997, Diana, Princess of Wales died in an auto accident in Paris; despite the controversial breakup of her marriage to Prince Charles, she was still one of the most famous and best-loved women in the world, and the public outpouring of emotion over her passing was immediate and intense. However, given the messy circumstances of Diana's breakup with Charles, official spokespeople for the Royal Family were uncertain about how to publicly address her passing. It didn't take long for the media to pick up on the hesitation of Buckingham Palace to pay homage to Diana, and many saw this as a sign of the cool emotional distance so often attributed to the royals, which in this case was widely seen as an insult against Diana and the many people who loved her. Prime Minister Tony Blair (played by Michael Sheen) saw a potential public-relations disaster in the making, and took it upon himself to persuade Queen Elizabeth II (played by Helen Mirren) to make a statement in tribute to the fallen Diana -- an action that went against the taciturn queen's usual nature. The Queen was released the same year that Helen Mirren played Queen Elizabeth I in an acclaimed miniseries for British television; The Queen also gave Michael Sheen his second opportunity to play Tony Blair after portraying the prime minister in the television film The Deal. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

How authentic is this supposed peek into the private lives of that most watched/dissected/examined of families? Ironically, only the object of our perennial curiosity, the royals themselves, can answer that question; and I seriously doubt that any of them would care to watch a movie about themselves. This movie needs no explanation and hardly any review. Anyone familiar on any level with Helen Mirren's work would know that she has few peers as an actress, and is utterly convincing in any role she undertakes. The Queen is no exception. It hardly seems a movie; more like a "day in the life ..." One either likes the subject matter or not. There are no special effects, only good acting and a convincing portrayal of life in a guilded cage. Recommended.

I liked the way the movie shows us in a very simple way how family relationships work in the royal family. It shows it in a very good way without falling into offending any parts of the royal family

I thought Prince Charles was portrayed as an idiot. The acting was otherwise good. But the general aura of the movie is one of loathing of Princess Diana which makes me wonder if she was really hated that much by the royal family. I thought there was way too much going on with the underlying current between Tony Blair and the queen. It seemed to take over the majority of the movie and perhaps it should therefore have been renamed to the Blair and Queen affair.

Good movie and great acting by Helen Mirren. I liked that they used actual news footage of Diana and the memorials that the British people left at the palace. C. - Miami, FL

good movie...all actors well suited for their characters and made them believable as I perceive them to really be...guess it was to point out that time has changed to importance of the monarchy to today's citizens more than about the Queen herself..would have been disappointed if I had paid in the theaters to see it..it was sad reliving the death of Diana...like other I was very touched by her death and did not even realize why so much.
