Director Bill Condon brings Tom Eyen's Tony award-winning Broadway musical to the big screen in a tale of dreams, stardom, and the high cost of success in the cutthroat recording industry. The time is the 1960s, and singers Effie (Jennifer Hudson), Lorrell (Anika Noni Rose), and Deena (Beyoncé Knowles) are about to find out just what it's like to have their wildest dreams come true. Discovered at a local talent show by ambitious manager Curtis Taylor Jr. (Jamie Foxx), the trio known as "the Dreamettes" is soon offered the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity of opening for popular singer James "Thunder" Early (Eddie Murphy). Subsequently molded into an unstoppable hit machine by Taylor and propelled into the spotlight as "the Dreams," the girls quickly find their bid for the big time taking priority over personal friendship as Taylor edges out the ultra-talented Effie so that the more beautiful Deena can become the face of the group. Now, as the crossover act continues to dominate the airwaves, the small-town girls with big-city dreams slowly begin to realize that the true cost of fame may be higher than any of them ever anticipated.
Jennifer Hudson indeed does steal the show. Didn't even recognize Beyonce 'til the end of the movie. She's beautiful and sings well, but is flat compared to Hudson.
I waited to see this movie and ended up coming away a little disappointed. The movie goes slow and the bulk of the climax is the last half hour of the film.
Simply a good musical. Not sure where some of theses other reviews are coming from, but if your a fan of soulful music, then there's no reason you shouldn't like, even love this movie. The music is extremely powerful and the performances touch the heart.
I disagree with most of the other reviews given here. I thought the cinematography, the acting, the singing, the songs, the story were all good. The movie touched me. It wasn't as powerful as the Broadway production, but it still told a good story well. It definitely showcased Jennifer Hudson's talent as a singer and actor, and she deserved the Golden Globe and Oscar that she won. Her performance was the best acting in the film, far outshining Beyonce, Jaimie Foxx and Eddie Murphy. In my opinion this was a story about Effie White, not Deena Jones, fictionalized characters representing the original Supremes. I will watch it more than once and I highly recommend it.
Great cast, good script, good acting. Movie was extended an extra 50 minutes by all the songs. Does anyone else think a great scene can go south when they start singing?
I would have given it one star, but it was great to see Eddie Murphy return to the screen as a sc#mb@g degenerate drug addict after 27 awful family films like Dr. Doolittle and the Nutty Professor.
I thought most of the movie was made for Beyonce to wear nice clothes and display her assets and talents. Good singing and dancing overall, but the story was not so great. Honestly, I did not get the point of this movie. It started as the dream of 3 young girls and ended up showing the fall of a smart yet controlling man. And characters conversing in songs, breaking into songs about feelings and all in the middle of a regular conversation ?! Please give me a break, so cheesy !!
I watched about 30-45 minutes of this movie waiting for it to get good. 45 minutes was all I could stand. Sealed it up and sent it back. Waist of a rental.
