An abandoned Russian child forsakes a life of luxury in the name of finding his true mother in director Andrei Kravchuk's affecting drama. Vanya is a six-year-old boy who is about to be adopted by a loving Italian couple, but this is a crucial moment in his life, and there are choices to be made. Will Vanya be content to simply spend his days basking in the warmth of the Mediterranean sun, or will his desire to know his true mother slowly eat away at him from the inside for the rest of his life? Though he eventually decides that in order to move on with his life he must first seek out his birth mother, Vanya must learn to read the file containing the information he will need to locate her. As Vanya sets out on the ultimate journey of self-discovery, he is about to find out that the world of children is a universe unto itself, a universe where the longings of the heart often overpower the ability to reason. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi
To me, the ending of this movie is perfect. The look on Vanya's face is unforgettable. Having been in the Russian countryside, I found the location of the film most intriguing. I was shivering as I watched scenes that had been shot in the cold and rain. Lots of food for thought here!
Terrific movie, about a boy living in a Russian orphanage who is about to be adopted by an Italian couple. The other boys begin to call him "the Italian," which is where the title comes in. The boy, Vanya, decides he must first find out what happened to his birth mother. Great acting all around, with a fine script, and splendid cinematography. Highly recommend.
We thoroughly enjoyed this film. It was a little difficult to follow and connect all of the characters, at first, especially with the subtitles. It was a real "eye opener" as far as exposing the workings and conditions in the Russian orphanages. The story was well crafted and the characters all quite interesting and believable. I would recommend this film to anyone.
Are the people giving this movie great reviews watching the same movie? I guess if you like dark, depressing movies - in places where no grass grows, apparently always cold, seems like the sun never shines, and a foreign film where the subtitles are in English, then yes, this movie deserves 4 stars. I just could not get into this movie. I ended up skipping to the last scene (which I never do) because it felt like I was wasting 2 hours of my life and had wasted a queue slot. Glad I did too because the ending wasn't great either! So it wasn't a total loss, I didn't sit through the whole thing, just the first 40 minutes.
