Two sisters learn that the bonds of family don't always end after death in this gentle observational comedy drama that marks celebrated Spanish filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar's 16th feature. The story explores the interactions between three generations of women in a Spanish family. Raimunda (Penélope Cruz) was born and raised in the apocryphal village of Alcanfor de las Infantas, in La Mancha, Spain. However, she now resides in Madrid, where she works as a janitor. She is married to Paco (Antonio de la Torre), an unemployed layabout, and looks after her daughter, Paula (Yohana Cobo). Raimunda's mother, Irene (Carmen Maura), died several years back (along with her father) in a house fire. Raimunda's younger sister, Sole (Lola Dueñas), also lives in Madrid and works as a hair stylist, while their aunt Paula (Chus Lampreave) still makes her home in La Mancha, with occasional help from neighbor Agustina (Blanca Portillo). The story takes an unusual and mystical twist when Agustina mentions that Irene has begun reappearing in ghostly form -- a fact questioned by Raimunda and Sole. After a murder and an unexpected family tragedy, Paula's story is indeed corroborated by the appearance of Irene's spirit (who has come to comfort her family), and Sole must decide how to respond to the long-dead mother's strange, enchanting presence. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

penelope shines in this movie! i could watch her beautiful face allllll day, the emotions in her eyes and when she cries or delivers a snappy one-liner - if you're a fan, or even if you're not!, you should see this film!

Just an extroardinarily beautiful film. Some may see it as a chick flick, but what could appeal more to men of all ages than Ms. Cruz. Loved all the features too.

A good production, well acted and directed, but the story is just, well, weird.

I had forgotten how much I enjoy Almodovar's movies. The actor's made the plot more a slice of real life than fiction. It was funny and sad. The interview with Penelope Cruz was interesting. Sometimes a "haunting" is for comfort in a life.

Both touching and absurdly comic, as are most of Almodovar films. The film is a paean to the strength of women, like a more mature. complex ˜Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown™. Full of wonderful images, moments and plot twists, from a murdered good-for nothing husband who must be disposed of, to a long dead mother who returns as a ghost to explain the past. Or maybe she is not quite dead. Full of fun scenes, and terrific performances, but something gets a little lost in the last 20 minutes Plot elements that need to be explained never are, while things that had no great weight , or that I liked liked the mystery of, are explained in great, literal detail that somehow lessens the impact, That said, this got a lot flat out raves, so maybe I should revisit it sometime.

I seriously dislike this movie. Turned it off in the middle and not because of the subtitles as I watch many foreign films. It was just slow and boring.

Another female propaganda movie that depicts women as brave and nurturing, and men as mindless brutes.

I like Penelope, but she was only "okay" for me in this. Her reaction to what had happened to her daughter in the film was about as moving as watching paint dry. The entire film (for me) was bland & without any real heart behind it. Lola Duenas was the only one I found believable in this unbelievable yawner...if I could give it only 2 and a half stars I would. Can't do that here so that's the only reason it gets 3 from me.

I rented this because Penélope Cruz was in it and I loved her in Spanglish. I didn't expect much and got less. A problem I have with Spanish subtitled movies is that I understand a bit of Spanish so when they say something and the subtitle is not an exact translation as I know it, it drives me nuts.
