If you like Merchat Ivory films, grand, period epics, this is the one for you. An outstanding cast including Judy Davis, this is one to own if not rent.

I remember watching this movie in the 80"s, and, even then I thought it was slow, but a very good movie. Now, 20 years later, it was very slow, didn't run smoothly. The movie seemed to be chopped up. There were times that I thought I had missed a scene, but, hadn't. It was very boring and long and drawn out.

It is very much a Lean film, although I agree with the other reviewer who felt it had a Merchant-Ivory feel to it. Excellent!

This movie could have been great, but it was far from it. Some of the best parts show how terribly the Indian people were treated by the British. My problem is that Dr. Aziz was such a wonderful, kind character, and the accusation was never clearly understood. It can be assumed that others wanted to accuse an Indian of something heinous, but I wish I knew why Adela never spoke up sooner. Was she the one who wanted to falsely accuse him? They talked her into it?? Unfortunately, you're left wondering and in the end Dr. Aziz is asking forgiveness to his accuser for taking so long to thank her????? He was being falsely accused, and now he is asking forgiveness. This is just another European movie made to look as if all non Europeans should somehow be grateful to Europeans for everything. The inferior race needs to thank the "superior" race for everything, even false accusations of rape. This movie was offensive, and if I were Indian, I would have been insulted.

This is a fine film, well directed and acted, and visually stunning. Unfortunately, I haven't read the Forster novel on which it was based, so I can't say anything about the adaptation. It does start a bit slowly and seems a little heavy handed at first in its portrayal of the evil colonial rulers, the oppressed subjects, and the noble in-betweeners who dare to mix the two. You have to wait for it to build up but are eventually rewarded as the film reveals the human-ness of its main characters and seems to shed many of the stereotypes it started out with. If you like your movies easy, with a cut-and-dried message that's simple to discern, you may not need to watch this one. However, I found the ending to be very satisfying, and best of all, it made me think.

The main point of the female characters was to interact with the INDIA natives, but the movie moved so slowly it didn't hold my interest. I stopped watchin after half an hour.
