After a debut on Broadway in 1951, Paramount spent an estimated 17 to 20 million dollars in production costs for this Lerner and Loewe musical. With Loewe's permission, Lerner wrote five additional tunes for the film with Andre Previn. Ben Rumson (Lee Marvin) is the grizzled prospector trying his luck panning for gold in California. Pardner (Clint Eastwood) is his companion. When Ben buys a woman from a Mormon, Elizabeth (Jean Seberg) expects equal rights for her gender and chooses to live with both men. Ben and Pardner tunnel under the boomtown to gather the fallen gold dust that has filtered through the cracks of the saloon and other places. The musical comedy features 13 songs, the most recognizable being "They Call The Wind Maria". The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band helps out on the song "Hand Me Down That Can O' Beans". Both Clint Eastwood and Lee Marvin are given a chance to show their vocal ability (or lack of it) in several songs. The initial release fell far short of regaining the millions put into the production, and most critics dipped their pens in poison to pan the picture -- though the film plays better than the critics would lead anyone to believe. Many jumped on the Paint Your Wagon smear campaign after the film proved to be not nearly as successful as other musicals. ~ Dan Pavlides, Rovi

This is what entertainment is all about. Clint Eastwood singing ... what a hoot. To fully appreciate this film, pay attention to the dialogue ... some great lines add to the merriment.

This movie had me laughing from the beginning to the end. Loved all the characters and the music as well. I had seen this many years ago, but am glad I watched it again! :)

the music is good and clint singing about the wind. it is a good movie. but kinda notice the band playing in the background. early on, it was the nitty gritty dirt band playing. if you had read the recent rolling stone for sept 05', they played for hunter thompson funeral. the movie, everyone should see it at least once to like it.

This is one of the funniest musicals I have ever seen. Lee Marvin is hysterical. The music is great.

What can you say but wow! I know I missed woodstock and all but this movie makes up for it in ways only God only knows...Superb filmaking. Bravo. I smell re-make on the way starring Matthew Broderick and Sarah Jessica Parker with Sean connery as Ben. Dynomite musical in 2010 whatta ya say Hollywood? Maybe when summer rolls around in Aspen?

Some of the music, in the first half of the film particularly, is not too bad and the scenery and filming are colorful. This film never became one of the "beloved" musicals probably because of the unnecessary cursing which, in attempting to be adult, merely bleeds any charm remaining in the picture after a highly unlikely wife-sharing arangement between the two main characters.

This movie was okay. Moved slowly. Nice musical parts. Good laughs at times. Not one I would watch again.

I went and say the stage version of this movie and it was fantastic. The movie was nothing like it and the more I watched it, the more disgusted I became. I really love some of the music like "They Call the Wind Mariah", but even that was kind of cheesy. Don't get me wrong - - I love musicals, but this was pretty bad. Clint Eastwood can sing, however, I was really surprised to see him in this.
