A battle for gay rights is fought on a small-time football field in this comedy drama from Germany. Ecki (Maximilian Brückner) is a talented soccer goalie who plays with a semi-pro team in a small German town, but he finds himself on the outs with his teammates when he fails to block a kick that costs the team the league championship. Ecki's relationship with the team goes from bad to worse when they discover he's gay, and they give him his walking papers. Furious, Ecki challenges his former team to a special match in which they'll face off against an all-gay team he'll assemble for the occasion. The homophobic team agrees to the match, but Ecki soon discovers finding ten capable gay footballers is no easy task, and making them into a competitive team is even harder. Making matters a bit easier for Ecki is his sister Susanne (Lisa Maria Potthoff), who introduces him to one of her co-workers, Sven (David Rott), a good-looking male nurse who can play soccer...and happens to find Ecki attractive. Männer Wie Wir (aka Guys and Balls) was written for the screen by Benedikt Gollhardt; it was his first theatrical film after establishing himself in television. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Fun, fun, fun; what can I say?! Been a long time since I've seen a gay themed film with wit, humor, a touch of reality, & heartwarming, too, that succeeded in every way. If you're looking for something humorous & uplifting, this just may be it.

A great movie about the way people accept gays, I'm not crazy about subtitles, but when they talk fast I just rewind. If your gay and can laugh at yourself, there's some pretty funny gay jokes, those germans are a hoot. Heart warming content.

This was a very entertaining movie only drawback was that it was not in english you had to read the subtitles on the bottem. The fact that i watched the whole movie that way tells you that it was a good movie

I love this movie because the main character starts out being very self-affirming and only grows in that quality. It is clear that his disapproving father is the one with the problem and yet his development is portrayed in a most amusing way. This movie will have you believing that the entire issue of homophobia can be solved on the sports field and this makes it a great bit of light hearted entertainment.

First, for those who hate to "read movies", forget about this one. Second, for those who think all European gay films are simply soft porn with lots of nudity, pass this by (you won't get that at all). However, if you want a leisurely (though predicable) cute movie where the gay man can actually play sports and get the man then this is for you!

This feel good movie has many of the "traditional" gay themes presented in a humorous, sometimes campy-feeling film. Ecki, the main character, suffers from being a closeted gay in the macho, hetero would of soccer. Family strife, a first love, and a dose of revenge keep this movie going, although it does suffer from some pacing problems and stereotyping issues. All in all, a fun movie to watch.
