For Marshal O'Neil (Sean Connery), the Jupiter moon Io is just another dingy mining town on the final frontier. When his wife leaves him and takes their son with them, it merely confirms that though he's traveled millions of miles, his life is going nowhere. Then he notices that miners are dying in strangely psychotic ways -- walking in space without spacesuits, carving up prostitutes. With the help of Dr. Lazarus (Frances Sternhagen), his investigation reveals that the miners are ingesting a lethal drug that speeds their work efforts. He learns that the company that runs the town is behind the drug. He confronts the town boss Sheppard Peter Boyle and soon has two hit men heading toward Io with a plan to kill him. As the seconds tick down to the next space shuttle's arrival, O'Neil plots to meet them and faces the biggest challenge of his life. ~ Nick Sambides, Jr., Rovi

This is the Sci-Fi flick that completely changed all future Science Fiction movies forever, Today some thirty years later Outland still remains the Benchmark film that all other SF movies are compared with. And this was not a brilliant film in as much as the plot, but it was a terrific one because it took an everyday drug story and placed it on IO, one of Jupiter moons. Outland said that you can take any common place event and put it into a Sci-Fi format. If you happen to come from Pluto, and you haven’t seen Outland, hop-on-board and see what all the fuss was about. Needless to say this is a must have movie for any serious DVD collection

Outland is one of the first sci fi movies I watched. I loved it! Instead of not even considering sci fi movies, I started looking for them. The storyline is great, it keeps you wondering. I was on the edge of my seat at times. Even if Sean Connery wasn't in the movie, I would have still loved it. Don't pass it by!

A HIGH NOON: AN ETERNAL SAGA As time has progressed , from the Hue and Cry, to the marshal who works only for money, to the marshal who despises police officers, the professional marshal is expected to be the common denominator and to have a price. The common man will cowar and cringe. But, Sean Connery gave relief to this long sad saga. Marshal O'Neal opted to die with great dignity, and found that another (Dr. Lazarus) was just like him. Today, such persons would be setup by prostitutes or whatever opportunity arises. But, on Io the Wild West returned, and the marshal got opportuities to use his superior mind and skills. This was a well done eternal story, and so moving.

This movie probably had the shortest High Concept in Hollywood history: "High Noon in Space." Spiced and modernized with some corporate skullduggery involving drugs. Connery is stalwart and stolid with Frances Sternhagen providing some feisty support. Predictable even if you haven't seen the original, but the real star is the production design and sfx, which were amazing and hold up quite well. Io Station has a gritty reality to it that makes you forget these guys should be bouncing around like handballs (or moon astronauts) in the low gravity. Jupiter is magnificently ominous filling most of the sky. The DVD mastering is only mediocre unfortunately but it has a decent assortment of extras. For myself, I'd rather have had better mastering.

It may have been interesting if it was not a Sci-Fi movie. It did not hold my interest and I was disappointed.

I am not a great science fiction film so I did not think so much of this movie, thugh I had heard it was terrific. There were good guys and bad guys and times it was tense, but I had difficulty understanding what was going on during some of it....probably cause I am not a big science fiction fan. But I do like Sean Connery and will watch his movies, whether they are understandable or not.

This movie is basically "High Noon" in outer space. Instead of a train coming, it is a rocket. Several hit men come to take out the sherrif. Instead of a pendulum clock ticking down, it is a digital clock. Etc.

One of my Connery favorites...shows the Master of the Silver Screen can do it from Bond to The Rock....probably would have been a mundane movie without Connery and some help from Boyle...a meager start for future Space-Action movies to come...fair special effects...acting from the supporting cast fair...o.k. in my book.
