Randall Miller's Marilyn Hotchkiss Ballroom Dancing & Charm School compiles an all-star cast to tell an unabashedly emotional story about life, love, and destiny. Robert Carlyle portrays Frank Keane, a man who has been in a deep depression ever since his wife passed away. One day while driving, Frank sees an accident. He investigates the scene to see if he can help and meets a dying stranger (John Goodman), who tells Frank that he was headed to a dance school in order to reunite with a woman he loved many years before. Frank decides to attend the dance school, and becomes involved with a variety of people. Originally beginning as a short film, Randall Miller's feature-length film was screened at the 2005 Sundance Film Festival. ~ Perry Seibert, Rovi
I expected to be entertained, and I was. What a cast! The fabulous Robert Carlyle was superb as usual.
True enough, as some have said, it is not a really exciting movie. It is not a thrill ride. Your teenager will hate it. It's a truly unusual movie for people with a bit of maturity and patience.
I suggest having some tissue ready - there are several very emotional moments - high and low. I found it an interesting tale and thought the movie was very well done, technically. I watched it three times and enjoyed it every time.
You may not love it, but if you appreciate movies that defy typicality - it is absolutely worth your time to give it a chance!
While I prefer Robert Carlyle as a Cannibal (Ravenous) both my husband and I enjoyed this film. All your favorite character actors make an appearance and it's nice to see em all. Interesting storyline and characters, good dialog, this was funny, sad and touching. I'm glad I took a chance and rented this one, a nice change of pace from all those zombie movies! Very enjoyable and different.
I was genuinely surprised by this film. I was leery of the odd title thinking it was going to be bland and predictable. I couldn't have been more wrong.
This movie was incredibly real and the acting was superb.
If you are looking for lots of action then I wouldn't recommend this; but if you are fan of character development and story telling, then this one is for you. So, don't let the title fool you: Rent and Enjoy!
Not perfect as you read in the other reviews here but I was drawn in by the story. My wife and I both enjoyed it. Might be an age range thing (we are early 40's) but it was nostalgic and touced some deep emotions.
John Goodman's high pitched monotone never-ending dying voice, Mary Steenburgen's shallow-y and fake actress whine . . . the trailers completely misrepresented this movie. I want that hour and 44 minutes of my life back!!!
I really gave this movie a chance. I wanted to like it because of the actors but I couldn't stand it anymore and I turned it OFF half way through. It was slow and I found this movie to be very annoying.
