A notorious gangster must reconcile his past in order to make a future for his criminally-minded son in this crime-drama starring football superstar Jim Brown and Pulp Fiction star Ving Rhames. James "Animal" Allen (Rhames) reveled in a life of violent crime until he was placed behind bars. Upon meeting an ageing revolutionary during his stint in the slammer, Allen is guided toward the written word of Malcolm X and offered an illuminating historic document by Machiavellian slave owner Willy Lynch, leading him to conclude that his people are being manipulated into killing one another by a higher force. Soon released on a technicality, Allen returns home to find that his son Darius (Terrence Howard) has taken up a life of crime and seems bent on maintaining his father's legacy. Now imbued with a newfound sense of clarity and purpose, Allen must convince his son to break the cycle of violence while he still has the power to do so by his own will. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

I read the reviews before I rented this movie and I wasn't expecting much, but I was pleasantly surprised. It is a gritty movie that portrays street life and prison life well. His transformation was anti-climatic though. I really expected something more, but I was entertained enough. A good "nothing on TV" movie to rent and watch.

I read the reviews that where already written about this movie and I must say I was feeling the same way before I actually watched this movie. I must admit this low budget movie was kinda like a small version of Malcolm X and South Central put together(you will understand me if you seen either of the movies). However I didn't care to much for the ending but you can't have it your way all the time. I would watch this movie again.

Great. Ving Rhames wrote the story. It cuts to the core of our "civilization."

watch this. But don't get excited. Ving is great, he is great in everything he does. But even he, nor James could save this movie. Okay story, but nothing new either. Get "Redemtion" instead. Now that's a good movie.

I think this movie is just what the doctor needs to order, how it talked about the father, son relationship. So many fathers and sons in our community don't know how to relate to each other. Even in a home where the father is present. That could be because so many of our minority homes, and young men don't have an (actual) real father, or father figure in the home, so the one's that do don't know how to relate to that figure because of their peers and their understanding of that male figure that may go in and out of their lives, or homes. Much less the entire Willie Lynch syndrome thing, brought out in the movie. This movie poses an interesting concept when it comes to the social, spiritual and economic, disparity among our people, when you consider the various groups, factions, relationships and sub-cultures found in our community. I also found the actor’s comments in the Special Features section of the DVD to be very compelling.

When you put a group of character actors together, you hope for the results that “An Unusual Line of Suspects” produced. No such cases hear. This film was over acted poorly written and badly directed. The story line is the usual bad guy finds himself in prison and with the help of a friend and then find a better way to live as a black man. This has been done so many times that it is just boring at best. What makes this worse is that a folded paper about a West Indian slave trader is the catalyst. But it is vagly explained, and never developed, leaving the viewer scratching their heads in puzzlement. This movie is so poorly done that I am going to do what I rarely ever do, and that is give this movie just half a star just because the ending is decent. The first 90 minutes are just terrible

Willy Lynch....in the movie a West Indies slave trader who created the modern black experience. In history, an Irish 'overseer' who never owned a slave. The giveaway in the movie is the "his name now means hanging" line. Great actors......incredibly bad movie.
