The Other (1972)
Member Rating:
This crime thriller with occult overtones puts a spine-tingling twist on the Jungian psychological notion of "the shadow." In the '30s, Holland and Niles Perry are 10-year-old twins growing up on an idyllic farm in the Connecticut countryside. Niles is a wholesome, outgoing lad, loved by the whole family. Holland's brooding mischief causes untold trouble. Eventually, the Perry family experiences a series of tragic accidents which may not be accidents. Unraveling the circumstances of these tragedies is a fascinating and subtle business. This film was adapted by Tom Tryon from his novel The Other and includes a film debut by the famous acting teacher Uta Hagen, as the twins' grandmother. ~ Clarke Fountain, Rovi

I would like to see this movie get a remake with Freddie Highmore as Holland & Nile Perry and M.Night Shyamalan behind the wheel as the Director he must of seen this movie as a kid too, it reminds me of his style. I remember watching it a few times as a kid, I loved it ! This could easy be a four star movie.

A very bizarre and disturbing movie. I enjoyed seeing Diana Muldaur in a role other than the doctor on Star Trek - The Next Generation.

wow!! quite disturbing & creepy I recommend it. It's a great suspense movie!!! Even though the rating says PG it deserves a higher rating than that, it definitely wasn't for young

I saw this as a kid and liked it (I was forbidden to see it, which helped), then read the book in college. Excellent, excellent book. You'll never see "it" coming. The movie captures much of the book, but no movie can be the book. I saw this a few years ago on cable and was horrified by the last half of it (even though I'd seen it 30 years earlier), and found it overall disturbing. The TV print had a voiceover at the end to help readers get "it," but it was unnecessary. But read the book! The Doubleday book club wrote, "You've never read a book like this one." Very true!
