Twelve men who belong to one of the world's most exclusive fraternities -- people who've walked on the surface of the moon -- are paid homage in this documentary. Using newsreel footage, rare NASA photographs, and digitally animated re-creations, Magnificent Desolation: Walking on the Moon examines the Apollo missions between 1969 and 1972 which put astronauts on the moon. In addition to explaining the technological know-how necessary to take our fliers to the moon, the film shares the thoughts of astronauts about what they saw and experienced in space, taken from their speeches and writings and read by a cast of distinguished actors, including Paul Newman, Morgan Freeman, Scott Glenn, Bill Paxton, and many more. Narrated by Tom Hanks (who also co-produced), Magnificent Desolation was shot and originally exhibited using the IMAX high-definition film format. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Disclaimer..... I saw this on the 3d IMAX screen and was BLOWN AWAY. As a space buff who knows quite a bit about the Apollo program I admit to leaving the theater in tears. So, if you can, see it in IMAX. Barring that, a DVD will have to do. VERY well done and successfully gives you the idea of what it might have been like to walk on the moon as an Apollo astronaut. (and to the previous reviewer who could not tell what was archival footage and what was staged......... ugh....... if THAT is your main criticism then you should have given this a higher rating). My main question is.... whats up with the 3d for DVD. Do you need 3d glasses?

Perhaps in IMAX this film would be more fun to watch, however, I found my three children talking and bored. The topic is one that should be a smash hit with young boys, but their is no awe and wonder in this compilation of nice photos. I did learn some nice facts, but not without sitting through a very simple piece of work -especially with such big name people on the project. I will look to find a better video of one of our nation's greatest accomplishments.

This documentary is dedicated to the 12 man(Hew also narrate) that have walked on the surface of the moon. Starting back with Neil Armstongs first words of history."That's one small step for [a]man,One giant leap for manking." Many peaple do not know that the A was lost in the transmission. These are facts that are revieled to the world in this documentry of mans quest to explore to moon.

We used 3D glasses and they didn't make any difference than without the glasses. What happened to this movie?

I really love to learn more about space travel at every opportunity I get . And this just does not deliver. No distinction is being made between real footage and re-enactments, fueling that whole silly "did they really go?" argument. Scientifically this is useless, too. There's no detail , just endless vague narrations. A good documentary draws you in on a reality level, and there must be enough real footage, audio etc, so why don't we see any of the brave people who actually went to the moon. Why are their voices not heard, but replaced by "distinguished" actors. An irrelevant fluff-piece without any real grit.

Can someone PLEASE answer the 3-D question? Also....I have an HDTV with 1080I upconversion and although the Resolution and sound would not be as good as Blu-Ray, It looks just like full screen HD and not that "Stretch-O-Vision" Also, The movie seems a bit short. Any reason for all the editing? What kind of vision aid would I need to see it in 3-D?
