In Kevin Reynolds' The Beast, George Dzundza plays a cruel Russian tank commander who gets lost in the wilderness during the war in Afghanistan. As the enemy closes in, the glazed-eyed Dzundza must rely on his survival training to see him through this crisis. Meanwhile, one of Dzundza's men (Jason Patric), abandoned and left to die by his demonic commander, joins the Afghan cause. Filmed in Israel, The Beast (aka The Beast of War) was adapted from a play by William Mastrosimone. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

A multi-faceted war film set in the Russian-Afganistan conflict. A conflict of men and machines, none of which was equal to the test of the terrain or the adversary. Simple people on their own ground fighting with what they had for just mere existence. Elememtary my dear Watson, the stuff of all good war/cowboy conflicts.

I AM TRULY AMAZED THAT ON A LOW BUDGET A FILM OF SUCH QUALITY CAN BE MADE POSSIBLE. GREAT ANALYSIS OF DIFFERENT CHARACTERS, ESPECIALLY HOW PRIDE MAY LEAD US INTO STUPIDITY AND UNNECESSARY VIOLENCE.

For ten years the conflict in Afghanistan dragged on. This movie gives a glimpse of the type of fighting that most have taken place there. Watch it and then get a book on the subject.

Absurd plot, unrealistic characters, and laden with war cliches. Only interesting aspect of this movie is that it was made in Israel. I doubt it could have been made there in today's environment.
