A writer runs an obstacle course of neuroses as he prepares to debut an important new work in this comedy drama. Nicky Rogan (Michael Keaton) is a successful playwright who, after a series of hit comedies, is about to debut a deeply personal drama, and is more than a little nervous about how it will be received. Rogan has learned that notoriously tough critic Steven Schwimmer (Robert Downey Jr.) will be reviewing the opening night performance; a bad notice from Schwimmer sent Nicky's good friend and fellow writer Elliott (Griffin Dunne) into an emotional tailspin from which he's yet to recover. Rogan also has reason to believe that Peter Redmond (Harris Yulin), the play's leading man, may have a serious health problem that could sideline the show. Rogan is being dogged by personal anxieties as well -- his wife, Lillian (Catherine O'Hara), is leaving him, he's having an affair with Joanne (Bebe Neuwirth), who is bankrolling the show, his father (Tom Aldredge) is in failing health, and the life-long Boston Red Sox fan is panicking as his heroes are being trounced by the New York Mets in game six of the World Series. Game Six was the first original screenplay from noted novelist and playwright Don DeLillo; the film premiered at the 2005 Sundance Film Festival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

First rate cast, especially Robert Downey, Jr --- but a miserable, disjointed plot about a Boston-based playwright who doesn't have his act together. Alas! Neither does the film.

This movie really does feel disjointed. It shows events that have no relevance to its thin story. Furthermore, the characters are weird and urealistic. The actions, paritcularly by Keatons' characters, come out of nowhere. He's not really convincing as a neurotic writer or as die hard Boston fan. It's hard to explain, let's just say it's like listening to your accountant talk about his wild late night. It just doesn't fit. Horrible waste of time.

No story here. Made like some disjointed art film. Unrealistic characters filled with bad acting. The cast did not help this movie. Most had half hearted performances. Awful.

That's how I felt when the credits rolled. I guess that was it. "Two thumbs way up?" They must have paid someone to say that because there is no way this movie deserves any thumbs up. Perhaps two middle fingers might suffice. This movie has absolutely no substance and goes off on many tangents without any meaning. Please spare yourself from the torture and rent something else! I give it a half a star for taxi driver's performance.

Don't waste your time with this one. I thought it might be interesting, but instead it was a boring waste! Spoiled characters, lamenting over their spoiled lives. Watching paint dry is more exciting.

I should have paid more attention to the previous three reviewers. Don't make the same mistake!

I'm shocked that my take on this film is so far from everyone else's opinion. I tried to figure why, thinking that it might be that I hate sports in general. I thought, maybe I missed the subtle meaning of something that these other true fans got from the beginning; but I found Keaton’s lament about his past with the Red Sox to be insightful, and though it wasn’t “Field of Dreams” I thought it might have helped me to understand the male animal just a little bit more, then again maybe not. There were places that I got a real laugh, and anything that makes me laugh is GOOD! I loved it. Takes all kinds.

Was a little slow at times, but overall wasn't worth >2 stars.

I have to disagree, yes it may have been slow at parts. But, overall is was a good movie. I also love any chance I get to see the ball go through Bill Buckners legs.
