Orca (1977) Reviews

Orca (1977)
Member Rating:
Another big-budget monster movie from producer Dino de Laurentiis, Orca concerns the mutual revenge pact between an obsessive whaler (Richard Harris) and an angry killer whale, whose pregnant mate Harris killed. The whale strikes back by biting off Bo Derek's leg, so Harris and concerned biologist Charlotte Rampling follow it to frozen northern waters for the climactic showdown. Just in case you like Jaws better than Moby Dick, there's a killer shark thrown in for good measure. Ponderous, pretentious, and dull, this opportunistic disaster fittingly sank at the box office. ~ Robert Firsching, Rovi

I loved Jaws, a huge classic, and was expecting not too much from Orca. But then I found that this movie goes in another direction, less scary, more human. The story is beautiful (and tragic), as well as the photography. Today they could improve its special effects but not its charme.

No where near "Jaws" status, but still entertaining. The Bo Derek and the missing leg scene will stay with me for ever. A decent revenge flick. -Stone

Being this movie came out before jaws, it definately for its time, was a great movie! It centered on two main characters, the man and the orca.Really drew you in and you felt for both.I highly recommend it!Very dramatic, very scary at times.

Surprisingly I loved it. You are actually rooting for the Whale (at least I was). The noises they make will have your skin crawling. Its sad too. It is like the other person wrote that it takes a different direction. With all the crap out there this is a good movie. Come to think of it is SAD too..so get ready for that (If you like animals)

Orcas are not ferocious killers! I understand that its just a movie, but `Jaws` scared people away from oceans when it too was fiction. (Sharks dont jump onto boats after people). Orcas are gentle and friendly towards people. No. No. And no.

This movie is awful. My kids hated it and thought it was the most corny movie ever. Don't waste your time.
