Shadows in the Sun (2004)
Member Rating:
Dawson's Creek star Joshua Jackson stars as Jeremy, a British book editor and aspiring writer seeking a new lease on life, in Shadows in the Sun, an uplifting drama from ABC Family. Sent by his employer to Tuscany to elicit a new book from dried-up (and cantankerous) exiled author Weldon Parrish Harvey Keitel, Jeremy soon finds himself smitten with Weldon's daughter Isabella (Claire Forlani) and gradually connects with Weldon despite the man's initial resistance. Soon, the two men begin encouraging each other to write as romance flowers between Jeremy and Isabella. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi

OK - so I got this because John Rhys-Davies is in it. His Gimli and Sallah performances were memorable. The problem is that he has a part that's only slightly above cameo appearance. Usually we give movies 20 minutes before we decide that it's worth devoting the full 2 hours to watching. I agree that the publisher (Davies) sent the agent (Jackson) to persuade the famous author (Keitel - one book makes you famous? or a one hit wonder) to write another. The plot is predictable, the acting wooden at times, and the climax was unconvincing but our expectations were exceeded by more than normal. We felt all warm and fuzzy afterwards. We watched it all the way through and were happy that we did. The extra features were unremarkable though. For a similar movie with better acting try Jean Reno in "For Rosanna." The plot's different than this one but seeing Reno in a dramatic role is nice. Highly recommended.

I saw this movie on the airplane going to California. I have rented it twice since. It was a real treat to see a movie with a love story where the characters are real. There is humor and serious decisions we all make in life. Rent it and watch it with someone you love.

Slow moving yet charming story of a young book editor (dreamy Joshua Jackson who gives a very good and believable performance) who travels to Italy to sign a popular writer of 20 yrs prior (Harvey Keitel - who is nothing short of marvelous) with hopes that he will write again and along the way falls in love with his daughter and examines his own life and dreams. Nothing very new but never-the-less this was still an enjoyable film with likable characters.

Good story, appropriate for just about any audience. I thought some of the scenes, including the ending were a little contrived, but okay....it's a good movie to watch without getting bored.

This movie was a portrayal of how some people are willing to see things beneath the surface and go beyond the basic duties of the assignment given to them. By taking things just a little bit further than what may have been expected, the character in this movie successfully show how joy and enthusiam can end up being extremely contagious. It is refreshing to see human compassion being celebrated or at least shown as worth the effort. Doing what is right or moral isn't usually in a job desciption or mentioned as part of an assignment and sometimes people find that it may be much easier to just walk away. When people decide to continue thier efforts to make something 'go right' inspite of encountering disagreement, biligerence, apathy or even basic denial it is wonderful to see that the end result has multiple and unexpected benefits and surprises. A truly happy movie where determination combined with authentic interest in others pays off.

Poor, implausable script (why would the Editor of a big book company send such a lame representative to woo a "famous" author?), wooden dialogue, terrible acting (even Harvey Keitel came off badly), cliche setting, and way too predictable. I'm sorry I saw it all the way through as I was restless and bored within the first 20 minutes. Truly not worth renting.
