Earthsea (2004)
Member Rating:
Lord of the Rings fans take note, acclaimed fantasy author Ursula K. Le Guin's epic tale of wizardry and prophecy comes to life as never before in director Robert Lieberman's imaginative screen adaptation of her popular Earthsea novels. Adapted for the Sci-Fi Channel, the two-part miniseries chronicles the journey of a reckless youth who seeks to master the ancient arts and become the most powerful sorcerer Earthsea has ever seen. As Ged (Shawn Ashmore) begins to discover the vast potential of his true powers, he must face great adversity if he is to truly fulfill his destiny and reunite his bitterly divided planet. Facing dragons, love, and eventually death itself, Ged's path to power is as wondrous and alluring as it is deadly. Also starring Isabella Rossellini, Danny Glover, and Kristin Kreuk (of TV's Smallville), this miniseries premiered in late 2004. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

Having not read the books, I cannot comment on departures from the story, but, taken on it's own merit I believe this was a good movie. Good casting, believable villians, and fair FX made for a good show. Some parts were a bit cliche but, sometimes you have to have an "I had it with me all this time" to save on screen time. This is one that I would purchase to fill a gap in my fantasy/ sci-fi section.

Made the mistake of reading the books first, which I highly recommend. ( reading the books).

It's a Sci-Fi original movie if that helps clarify anything. Movie was all right. I was not dissapointed watching it, but would not suggest to anyone that they must see it.

The disk I received was cracked I reported the issue and you tell me I'll have to wait for a replacement, yet your stupid automated system asks me for a review. Well my review is that your methods of customer satisfaction are dismally inacurate.

Earthsea was a simple yet pleasing escape into right & wrong as well as maturity & responsibility. I would purchase this film without hesitation.

I enjoyed it. Made for TV, some of the special effects are not the best, but if you can get past that it is entertaining and that is why I rent movies.

Where to begin? First of all, since the Earthsea books are frequently considered young adult literature and have no sex and very little violence, I assumed the movie would be appropriate for elementary-age children. My mistake! Within the first five minutes you see a naked woman and a man gets his head chopped off. If you have read and enjoyed the books, I find it hard to believe you could possibly enjoy this hacked up, non-sensical version. I was fooled by the big name cast, believing it must be a quality production to get actors like Rossellini & Glover, but I guess they need to pay the bills just like the rest of us. Save your time and money and wait for Studio Ghibli's animated version.
