The life and times of Augustus Caesar are brought to the screen in this made-for-television historical epic. After assisting Julius Caesar in a string of military campaigns, Augustus is adopted by the Roman leader, and when Brutus and Cassius kill Julius, Augustus joins forces with Marc Antony to rid them and their associates of the Roman leadership. As Augustus becomes Rome's new and uncontested leader, he falls for the beautiful Livia and is forced to turn against Marc Antony on the field of battle. While Rome enjoys a period of wealth and progress, Livia becomes politically ambitious and Augustus finds he has become the center of an assassination plot. Augustus stars Peter O'Toole and Charlotte Rampling, who respectively portray the mature Augustus and Livia. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Peter O'Toole can't help but over-act ... after all, the title character is one of the most notable humans in history. This is, however, a very well edit'ed adaptation of the history of Rome's first emperor. It offers additional insights into the events surrounding the life of Caesar Augustus. Don't expect too much 'swords and sandals' here, though; this adaptation is more cerebral than full of action.

Worth viewing if you enjoy stories of Roman Empire politics and power hungry families. Some of the historical details may not be accurate, but they are depicted close enough to allow this to be a believable perspective of some of the most written about events in the Roman Empire time period of Caesar Augustus. It’s a bit long but at least you don’t have to sit through TV commercials and you can always take a break where one was.

O'Toole is fine, the rest, eh. Typical of the genre and a great deal more about how Octavian became Agustus than what Agustus was like.

Not the greatest production values. Check out the low budget painted scenery and obvious CGI effects. Some of the acting is very good; give credit to Charlotte Rampling for playing the elder Livia-a role pretty much mastered by O'Toole's real life-ex Sian Phillips in I Claudius. I Claudius is the better choice but the women in this film are quite good. "Cleopatra" is a stunning looking woman, and the young Livia and Julia both give good effort. O'Toole stills sounds like O'Toole but, to steal the line Elton John made famous describing Keith Richards, he looks like "an arthritic monkey" and it's hard to tell where the acting leaves off when he is playing an aged, weary Augustus.

I dont care how much you love movies about ancient Rome dont rent this movie. I had really wanted to watch this film, was even waiting for it to come in the mail. I put it on and ten minutes later turned it off, put it in the envelope and than the mail box. Read a book instead, you stay awake longer.

This seems to have been a made for T.V. movie. Maybe ok for children to watch, but if you know much history of the Roman Empire, you will find this movie to be unrealistic, unenvolving and boring.
