With an insane asylum standing in for everyday society, Milos Forman's 1975 film adaptation of Ken Kesey's novel is a comically sharp indictment of the Establishment urge to conform. Playing crazy to avoid prison work detail, manic free spirit Randle P. McMurphy (Jack Nicholson) is sent to the state mental hospital for evaluation. There he encounters a motley crew of mostly voluntary inmates, including cowed mama's boy Billy (Brad Dourif) and silent Native American Chief Bromden (Will Sampson), presided over by the icy Nurse Ratched (Louise Fletcher). Ratched and McMurphy recognize that each is the other's worst enemy: an authority figure who equates sanity with correct behavior, and a misfit who is charismatic enough to dismantle the system simply by living as he pleases. McMurphy proceeds to instigate group insurrections large and small, ranging from a restorative basketball game to an unfettered afternoon boat trip and a tragic after-hours party with hookers and booze. Nurse Ratched, however, has the machinery of power on her side to ensure that McMurphy will not defeat her. Still, McMurphy's message to live free or die is ultimately not lost on one inmate, revealing that escape is still possible even from the most oppressive conditions. ~ Lucia Bozzola, Rovi

This movie is a classic. The performances are amazing. And the look at the history of US mental health care is frightening. Watch it!

One of the best movies of all times. Can't belive people are saying less. Don't know what the world has come to when people give the same rating to war zone punisher as one flew over the cuckoos nest.

This movie came out the year I was born and although I have always been a movie buff I never saw it until recently. Folks this is Jacky boy at his finest. It features great performences, excellent wit and a compelling story that touches us all.

One of the all-time best. I'd like to speak about an unheralded actor--Brad Dourif. He plays the character of Billy who moves the plot along. I have never been moved to such an empathetic feeling watching an actor that I too wanted to kill for him. Now watch him in "Mississippi Burning' and then I have never wanted to kill a character more than I did Dourif's sheriff. Just try it and see what I mean!

I first watched this movie when I was about 14 and remember thinking it was a good movie. Having recently read the book (some 30 years later) I decided to rent the movie as I had heard that Ken Kesey was not happy with the film. Well, I can see why. They really don't do a good job of setting up the desperate situation in the ward and that diminishes the role Jack's character has in mixing things up. Nurse Ratched is a much more insidious character in the book. Acting jobs were great all around though.

Oh well, yes, supposedly a master piece. I just saw a bunch of guys screaming and going in circles. Few good ideas, like the nurse, the lobotomy bit, but the rest, it was just a failed attempt to portrait a psych ward.
