A dedicated human rights lawyer and a political activist who suffered at the hands of South African police officer with no regard for human life finds that the only thing more dangerous than standing up for your beliefs is the discovery of the truth in director Tom Hooper's adaptation of Gillian Slovo's captivating novel. Tortured at the hands of police officer Dirk Hendricks (Jamie Bartlett) for his efforts in seeking equality under the brutal apartheid regime, social activist Alex Mpondo (Chiwetel Ejiofor) is shocked upon learning that Officer Hendricks is now seeking amnesty for his violent deeds. When human rights lawyer Sarah Barcant (Hilary Swank) returns to her South African home to represent Alex, she quickly discovers that the deeper she delves into the past, the more she has to fear in the present. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

Once again Hilary Swank has chosen to act in a movie with human significance and social conscience. I found the movie very well done. Perhaps some in our society do not think that injustices committed in nations on the other side of the world, tare of viewing interest. The historical violence, the offers of amnesty, the ethical dilemmas are for those who desire justice and the knowledge of injustices being committed in various parts of our planet. Moreover, every good humanitarian resolution does not emanate from the U.S. Sadly, the corporations who control the news (and the vast majority of the movies shown in our "free" land seem to be more concerned about the trials and tribulations of so-called celebrties and sports stars.

I am being generous in giving this a full star. While the subject matter is very engrossing, the acting and directing isn't worth the money spent on the movie. No wonder I never heard of it at the box office! If you would like to see a GREAT movie of exactly the same subject matter, rent "In My Country" with Samuel Jackson.

This was an exceptional film that brought to light a part of world history that is often not heard. I thought the performances by Ejiofor, Swank and Bartlett were powerful and heartfelt. Overall, it was a difficult story to watch but it was a story that was most certainly worth telling. I highly recommend this movie.

this is a true story. chiwetel ejiofor let me know that the man this happened to was on the set everyday. it takes about 15 to 20 minutes before the movie actually hits its stride. it is a mystery, suspense, action with some graphic violence. What is the truth? how do you explain the truth? what is forgiveness and what is necessary for this. most people do not know much about the tribunals. western culture has not tried forgiveness on this grand a scale. south africa voted and determined that it was better to forgive as long as they told all of the truth. "Catch a fire" is about apartheid and "blood diamond" (hollywood fictional film) covers the time period of after the tribunals what did the forgiven become. many ended up in sierra leone as mercenaries. the reason why no one heard about this film they put in every last cent in making it and had no money leftover to market it. let's keep it alive by telling others.

What I thought would be a predictable story was well written with good acting. Recommended.

This was a good film, but I was confused at the abrupt ending. I don't know if it was the DVD that Blockbuster sent me, or the actual ending. It could be the DVD was damaged. There was nothing of credits or anything identifying the film or the end of it. Just the main character and torturer talking. Then it was over, and went to play the film etc. This was disappointing after watching a very good film. I wasn't sure if I actually saw the ending of it.
