Bay of Blood (1971)

A family's murderous battle over some bayfront property is the subject of director Mario Bava's bloody horror-thriller, which many have cited as the grandfather of the modern slasher film. Claudine Auger is the scheming daughter of a murdered Countess; her staged suicide forms the basis of the film's plot. In a seemingly unrelated subplot, four hippies arrive in a dune buggy led by Brigitte Skay, who dances the Shake and swims naked before having her throat hacked open with a machete. Skay's boyfriend has his face chopped with the same machete and the other couple has a spear thrust through their bodies as they make love. All of these murder scenes were imitated in Steve Miner's Friday the 13th, Part 2, and the film's style influenced countless American slasher films of the 1970s and '80s. Bava also includes a strangulation by telephone cord, a gory axe decapitation, a man speared to a wall, and five other murders. Antefatto was a trendsetting film, and paved the way for literally hundreds of graphically violent imitations. The film exists in several versions, differing mainly in the extent of the bloodshed. ~ Robert Firsching, Rovi

Keep in mind this isn't the same quality movies as today but considering it's early 70's it's pretty decent. The music gets alittle annoying though.

I cant even tell you about how upset I was to find out this movie was horrible. I had heard about this being a classic horror movie for years and years, so I finally see it expecting it to be great and fabulous, ha thats a joke. This is a boring, stupid, badly acted waste of a horror film. Not recommended

The high ratings from most on here are probably since this movie had pretty good death scenes and effects weren't half bad except that the blood looked like red paint. Everything else was bad, yes this was early 70s but I see why this is a movie that is usually forgotten in the slasher world. It was boring, bad acting, really bad camera work since many scenes were blury - which seemed like was shot like this on purpose. Classic slasher? yes, more like prehistoric. good horror / slasher movie? NO! Don't waste your time, thsi was not entertaining like many 80s slashers.

Typical giallo feel to this movie, depicted as the grandfather of modern slasher films (maybe on the mothers side of the family). But, like Grandpa, time has not been kind to it. It looks VERY dated. Friday The 13th may have "borrowed" from this movie. But, what Friday The 13th did borrow, it improved upon ten fold. All aspects, from acting and directing to special FX, are pretty standard stuff. Those familiar with giallo know what to expect. If you're not a heavy horror fan or gorehound, you won't miss anything if you pass this movie by. It's a bottom queue movie, at best. Check out the movie, Zeder, and The Beyond.

You can tell this is the most early psycho slasher gory film. Has it's 70's cheese for sure, but still a must see for the horror movie buff. The ending is pretty terrible, more funny than anything else. Some of the shots of the lake are very reminiscent of Friday the 13th Part 1, and killing scenes from Part 2.

I finally saw this movie after all these years and I realized something while watching it. Friday the 13th movies stole scenes from it. I mean the scenes are so exact. Anyway story was a bit slow but over all I enjoyed it because it came before the other slasher movies and had the orginality.
