Sea Spies: Secrets Beneath the Waves (2004)
Member Rating:
The race for global domination isn't always run on land, and in this release that explores the unseen battle waged beneath the ocean surface, former Naval intelligence officer Dr. Robert Ballard takes viewers to the depths of the sea to reveal the remarkable technology behind Navy submarines. Additional information on such recently declassified deep-sea defense operations as SOSUS, the U.S. Navy's top-secret sound surveillance system, offers a look at how the military had adapted to take advantage of the open waters during warfare, and interviews with marine experts and high-ranking military officers offer a fascinating look at the future of ocean-based military technology. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

From a former Sosus Analyst: Well, We were much better than they say, and the Akula wasn't that good. Good info for telling your kids what you did, if you were there. Neal Dobbins ruled!

This DVD is an excellent supplement, but definitely not a substitute, for PBS' Nova - Submarines, Secrets & Spies (VHS, 1999). It adds more historical cold war context, particularly regarding the role of undersea technology in defusing the Cuban Missile crisis of 1962. The special feature on Communism delivered by the late diplomat Boris H. Klosson is worth the price of the disc itself! Robert Ballard, a true American submarine hero, does the victims of the USS Scorpion a disservice in this DVD, however, by reinforcing the Navy's official explanation for the loss of that nuclear sub and completely ignoring an equally (if not more)plausible (but embarrassing) explanation detailed in the PBS/NOVA documentary.
