There's little that happens in On Golden Pond that isn't thoroughly predictable from the start, but the film is blessed with so much star power, charm and honest sentiment that everyone in the audience is willing to ignore the cliches and go the distance. In his last film, Henry Fonda plays Norman Thayer, a cranky 80-year-old retired professor, making his annual pilgrimage with his wife Katharine Hepburn (in her only teaming with Henry Fonda) to their New England summer cottage. Their solitude is interrupted when the couple's daughter Chelsea (Jane Fonda) arrives with her fiance Bill (Dabney Coleman) and his son Doug McKeon in tow. It takes a while, but Jane Fonda and Coleman, about to go on a vacation of their own, persuade Henry Fonda and Hepburn to take care of McKeon. Henry Fonda and the kid dislike each other from Square One, and it looks as though this summer (which may very well be Henry Fonda's last) will be a depressing experience. Gradually, Henry Fonda and McKeon grow to love one another; their bond is strengthened during a near-fatal accident while fishing. It is through the warm relationship between Henry Fonda and the boy that the old man and his daughter Jane Fonda are at last able to display affection towards each other--the first time they've done so in years. Gorgeously photographed by Billy Williams, On Golden Pond is a wonderful valedictory for Henry Fonda, who died not long after the film's completion; Katharine Hepburn has less to do, but few can do so much with so little. Academy Awards were bestowed upon Henry Fonda, Hepburn, and screenwriter Ernest Thompson (who adapted the film from his stage play). ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

This movie had two all-time great actors, Hepburn and Fonda. Matt F should have looked at the movie for what it was. A movie showing how a couple can grow old together, love each other and deal with life. It was nice to see Jane Fonda in a movie with her father. This is not one of those action pack type of movies, but it was a classic type of movie you would expect Hepburn to be in. This is a movie to sit back and take it in.

This is one of my favorite movies of all time! There is no "acting" here, just two masters at thier craft (Fonda & Hepburn). I am 45 year old Dentist and have loved it since the first time it came out.

This movie is light on action, but heavy on drama. It is a study of the stormy relationship between a father and daughter, played by Henry and Jane Fonda, that in many ways mirrors the stormy relationship they had in real life. The acting is so honest and compelling that the Oscars it received were well-deserved. Interestingly enough, it was the only movie for which Henry Fonda won an Oscar, and he died shortly after receiving it.

I watched this movie when it first came out. I thought it was a instant classic then. I loved every minute of it. All the actors were great. Of course Katharine Hepburn and Henry Fonda, established themselves as role models for those that dare follow the trails that they blazed. Both were deserving the oscars they received. I watched this recently with my children who were not born when this movie came out. They have never seen it before. They were truely blown away. It was as though the movie was a new release. This movie has truely withstood the test of time. I just want the Hollywood producers to know that, start making movies, like "On Golden Pond" and watch people line up to see it with their families. Wouldn't this be great for the economy?

I think you have to be mature (not in age) to really appreciate this movie; I believe that to be the reason some people think it is boring. What a wonderfully written movie!! It seems so true to life - especially when dealing with life and death through the eyes of two "golden" aged people. It was hard to believe they were only acting - or were they? The movie was funny, smart, beautiful, well-written, and engaging. I didn't care too much for Jane Fonda's role; she was bitter and mad from the beginning without good explanation. What a classic! And what great actors! I see why they won Oscars for their roles.

Short on plot but rich in character development, Ernest Thompson's play became a hit movie thanks to the acting of Katherine Hepburn, Henry and Jane Fonda. The conflicts between father and daughter mirrored what they were truly in their real life--and if you aren't moved by it, there something wrong with you. Henry Fonda finally received his Oscar for this classic movie. A TV version of this was made with Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer and while there was chemistry between the two, their acting unfortunately cannot compete with the quality of Hepburn and Fonda. Heartily recommended.

We alway considered it a classic, decided to let our 11 year old see it and, well... forgot that every other word was G.D. ... bummer... with a PG rating didn't think it would be too bad. disappointed in that, but still a great movie!
