Shortly after President George W. Bush announced that "major combat operations have ended" in the war in Iraq, filmmaker Michael Tucker (a self-described "Army brat" whose father served in Vietnam) traveled to Baghdad, where he and his camera crew were embedded with the 2-3 Army Field Artillery unit, improbably based out of a bombed-out mansion which once belonged to Saddam Hussein and his son Uday. Tucker and his crew spent two months with the soldiers of the 2-3 FA (in September 2003 and February 2004), following the young men and women as they went about their daily rounds in a land where they were welcomed by some and targeted by others. Gunner Palace offers a sympathetic but objective portrait of the American fighters as they go on routine patrol, try to ferret out insurgents, help train Iraqi forces, keep an eye peeled for homemade explosives, police some of the local troublemakers, and for the most part simply try to get through their days without the loss of life and limb in the midst of what they sarcastically call "minor combat operations." Gunner Palace received its world premier at the 2004 Telluride Film Festival and became the first documentary about the war in Iraq to be shot and released while the war was still taking place. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Not so good movie...

Wow, I thought this was a really good documentary. I thought it was a good portrayal of what soldiers are going through in Iraq. If anything it didn't try to put a spin on things, it just let the soldiers tell their stories and showed people at home the difficulty of the job they have. I felt like it showed the soldier for what he/she is, not some inhuman robot with superhuman courage, but real people, mostly kids. Kids who have more responsibility than anyone else their age. If anything this movie is real. Maybe it's not a movie to buy but it's deffinitely a rent.

This movie lacks a clear vision. The poor editing along with the trite narration and amateur raps by soldiers does little to achieve a unified or cohesive storyline. Most of the film focuses on whatever disorder, chaos or immaturity exists in the war. Tucker never really lets the soldiers speak about the war; rather the focus is on the soldiers' leisure time or the like. You are far better off watching a CNN or FNC special.

The movie really tried hard to take you deep inside the lives of the soldiers themselves, but seeing them play guitar, hearing them freestyle, and having them tell us what they do during the day doesn't put me any closer to them than watching CNN. Everybody just kept saying how people back in the US have no idea what it's like over there. Fine, I believe you, but after watching this movie, I still don't have any better idea. Maybe this is good for someone who never keeps up with the news, but your average informed citizen isn't going to get anything out of it. On the other hand, a few of the freestyles weren't too bad. That's what the extra half-star is for.

zzzzzz... this was a snooze and a disapointment. and for a PG13 it was pretty racy language wise. I wanted my young teens and preteen to see what it was like to be a soldier in Iraq but this was not a film for them. Aside from the fact they were bored to tears, the language was a bit over the top. Should have had an R rating I think. Hopefully, when the war and occupation is all finished, there will be other movies that come out that give us better insight into what really went on there.

as others have said nothing much different than watching cnn. the worst part is watching the 2 guys talk about the shells thats hitting their camp and they do nothing about it. then the camp fires back 1 to 2 minutes later after 10 mortars hit the camp.
