Adapted from the nonfiction book by Natalie Robins and Steven M.L. Aronson, Tom Kalin's Savage Grace recounts the true crime tale of the death of Barbara Baekeland. Stephen Dillane stars as Brooks Baekeland, the son of the man who invented Bakelite, one of the early forms of plastic. As the family fortune begins to decrease after years of wealth, Brooks marries Barbara (Julianne Moore), who desires to mingle in the highest social circles. They have a child, Antony, who is homosexual. Antony grows up to kill Barbara, in part because Barbara takes a personal interest in "curing" her son of his orientation. This was Kalin's first film since 1991's Swoon, a film about the infamous Leopold and Loeb murders. ~ Perry Seibert, Rovi

I rented this movie because of its cast. Julianne Moore is an amazing actress, and the others in the cast are also very strong. But... Yuck! It's a twisted story about sick people with lots of money and no scruples. I watched the movie all the way through because it was fascinating, in the same way newsreel footage of the burning Hindenberg is fascinating. I have a very difficult time liking a movie if I don't like its characters, and not one character here is likable. I don't blame the actors; they are portraying despicable people, and they play them well. But it is impossible to find one redeeming quality among any of the people portrayed here. Much of the movie made me squirm. This is not a casual "popcorn" movie, by any means. On the plus side, the production is sumptuous, and the scenery in Spain and other European locales is beautiful. And, as mentioned, the performances are stellar. But none of those factors can negate the nasty taste this film left in my mouth.

I've never seen a movie with a twist like this before. I was caught very off guard and eventhough it was disturbing I still enjoyed the movie. It was based on a true story, which made it even better.

The movie was very slow. Since it was based on a true story, the viewers knew the ending at the start. Therefore, the acting should have been more dramatic, anything to create some interest. I feel the movie failed terribily.

Plot of the movie: Tony's boyfriend used him, then his spanish girlfriend ran off with Tony's dad. Dad is out of the story from now... His mom found a gay guy.. and this gay guy "took care" of Tony by sleeping with him and then later on sleep with Tony's mom... Then Tony's mom isn't satisfied and in the end decided to sleep with her own son. The son is so messed up that he killed his own mother and injured his grandma... never liked julianne moore and never will anymore. gave her couple chances. i watched this with my gf and we were like.. what is this crap??

I agree with the folks saying "why did this story need to be told". I have always been a fan of Julianne Moore, but she either needed the money (doubt it), or as someone else suggested, owed somebody a favor. Her performance was great as usual - the fact that I absolutely despised her and was not sorry she met the fate she did, tells me her performance was spot on. I doubt however, if she is very proud of the final product. Was this even released in the theaters? - I certainly don't remember it.

It seems that fantastic wealth is so boring that the only way to get a thrill is to practice incest. Thanks for sharing, whoever decided to make this movie.

Ruff stuff. The world can be a sewer. The idle mind that has no purpose (like having to go to work for a living) can go far astray - 'like down the bottom of an elevator shaft'.

This movie is not for the squeamish. A true story, nothing is held back and lots of it is shocking to the sensibilities. Basically the story of a mentally ill family with lots of money so they don't have to address their sickness. The only character I had any sympathy for was the son because he was actually the victim despite the fact that he murdered his mother. That act provides relief for the audience as well as for him. Julianne Moore was very courageous to take on the role of the mother - the sickest one in the lot. She's truly a monster and seeing her own anguish and pain doesn't evoke any sympathy for her. It's a disgusting and depraved film and I can't think of any redeeming features other than the production values, which were excellent, as were the performances. It's the subject matter that I found revolting.
