Since the end of World War II, American families have steadily moved away from large cities into suburban areas, with little thought to the ecological costs of suburban life. Creating neighborhoods with large single-family homes that require significant amounts of energy to heat and are located an inconvenient distance from schools, shopping centers, and employment districts that demand the daily use of automobiles, suburbs are remarkably inefficient communities built around the notion that fossil fuels will always be inexpensive and readily available. However, many experts have speculated that the Earth's supply of oil and natural gas is rapidly dwindling, and that the amount available may throw the world into a global, political, and economic crisis in the foreseeable future. The End of Suburbia: Oil Depletion and the Collapse of the American Dream is a documentary which examines the rise of the suburban lifestyle, the costs to the Earth and the economy of our current living habits, where we may be headed, and how this situation can be remedied. Canadian journalist Barrie Zwicker serves as narrator. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

After watching " The end of suburbia" most of the predictions that were made in 2003 have come true as of 2008. At the time this video was made, gas was $1.89 a gallon and was predicted to reach $4 a gallon. Today with the price of oil at $118 a barrel, it seems that what was predicted is coming true. I heard on the radio yesterday that gas will be $7 a gallon in five years. I believe it.

This was made in 2004 & if you watch it now you can see what they said then has started to unfold only 4 short years later! A note to "Amanda" & those that think like her, please go check your history & facts as everything mentioned about GM is factual (to bad they dont know how to do business in the year 2008 in the same manner - they might not be going down the drain!).

All Americans should be forced to watch this movie. My favorite line is that in 100 years the human race will think the people who lived NOW, through this oil era, were "horrendous people" for what we are going to leave behind....very scary but very real. Americans in particular need to have this wake up call.

This documentary may be old news to informed environmentalists or boring to people who want to be entertained by this documentary, but the information contained in it is of supreme importance to everyone who has a stake in the modern economy. If you ever wanted to know what is the relationship between global warming, our economy, oil and the war in Iraq, this documentary will help you connect the dots. It is of supreme importance that everyone watch it and prepare for the future so as to avoid catastrophe. Where as this documentary shows the obstacles we will face, the follow up documentary "Escape from Suburbia" recommends some possible solutions.

I was asked to watch this in a university history class in 2008 and it was amazing to see just how accurate the events predicted in 2004 had actually unfolded. Everyone should watch this if they live in western suburbia, it may help you make some life changing realizations.

It is always good to have a reality check every now and then. It says we were certainly lacking visionary leadership.

"The End of Suburbia" starts out with exerts of the Redbook video that was included in the specials. But not much more than talking heads {so called experts} that pontificate on Litarded Talking Points... Even bringing in people like the evil "so called" neocons. Yes, aside from the shorts it was a complete repeat of all the Libtalking points. http://rdrutherfordmoviereviews.blogspot.com/2008/07/end-of-suburbia-oil-depletion-and.html

This movie was boring. Stated GM and some other investors tried to increase the amount of gas people were dependent on by building outside the city and "tricking" people into wanting their version of the American Dream. They also went on to talk about how we are going to run out of oil and all of that. Seemed like a bunch of garbage to me.
