Gary Sinese directed this respectful re-telling of John Steinbeck's classic novel, with Sinese as the wily George and John Malkovich as the brutish, simple-minded Lennie. Set during the Depression era, the film opens as George and Lennie are running from a woman with a torn dress, who has sent a gang of ruffians to chase the two out of the county. After a long bus ride and a ten-mile walk, George and Lennie arrive at a migrant farm in California's San Joaquin Valley, where they seek work. George dreams of putting together enough money to buy a small piece of land where he and Lennie can build a home; he hopes that in California the two can realize their dream. Unfortunately, the foreman of the ranch, Curley (Casey Siemaszko), enjoys tormenting Lennie, while Curley's frustrated wife (Sherilyn Fenn) entices Lennie with her sexual allure. George warns Lennie to steer clear of Curley's wife, but Lennie follows her to a barn where a tragedy occurs and George and Lennie's dreams are shattered. ~ Paul Brenner, Rovi

I liked everything about this movie except for the end of it because it was really sad. They also left somthing out in the end from the book but thats beacause it would not make any sense to put that scene in for the ones who have not read the book. But other than the sad ending I really enjoyed this movie.

The performance by John Malkovich and Gary Sinise together with this touching story make this movie a five-star. Although the ending was very sad it was the only choice. The alternative would have been worse

My gosh, I had forgotten for a while what amazingly powerful, skilled actors John and Gary are until I watched this. The whole cast was extremely well chosen. This is by far the best film version I recall. Don't let ANYTHING stop you from catching this telling of the tale - you won't be disappointed . It was spellbinding and, of course, poignant to the nth degree. Wonderful film! Don't let the ending deter you -during this time in America the only other choice there might have been for Lenny was a lonely, drugged, horrorific existence inside an "asylum", and perhaps not even that. People of better means with all manner of incorrectly diagnosed medical conditions filled those nightmarish beds. These people were POOR so I doubt that there was even that access available to such a man. If you care to think beyond the film, what would have become of him if something had happened to George? You only THINK the end of this film is sad if you can't figure that one out..

Don't be lazy go and read the book. I love this book growing up and the movie was good but it wasn't the book not even close to as good as the book was. Yeah it was the same story but this was a book that every kid should read. -T

The photography did a great job of capturing Steinbeck's California. All in all, it wasn't a bad remake of the classic film, and not a bad adaptation of the novel. It also sorta was weirding me out how much Sherilyn Fenn, as Curly's wife, looked like Dianne Feinstein trying to be a femme fatal.
